What supports the hood?

I'd say yes for a few reasons. It channels air over the hood rather that under it. Air under the hood could cause a few issues like hood lift at speed and reduced radiator air flow from too much pressure in the engine compartment. Another reason to have one would be less road grime, water and salt in the engine compartment.

I ended up ordering the strip. The description says that it is self-adhesive (peel-off backing). Can anyone offer any tips on putting this thing on correctly? I want to make sure that it is perfectly straight, centered, and located in the proper place on the grill.

Clean the area, then clean the area again, then use mineral spirits or alcohol to clean it last time for dust, then install happily.

clean the area well, as delux2769 said, then peel off just the first inch or two of the backing. Position the strip and continue peeling as you install the strip.

In other words, don't start by pulling off all the backing.

There was a nice diagram at the bottom of the PDF someone posted. Looks like each end centers over the headlight.

I wood go to the dealer and check another jeep and install it the same way in there parking lot that way you could measure it and get it right.
