To put the questions to bed, no, I have no intentions of going that far just for the oil change. Yep, boonies it is.

Oil, oil filter and air filter will be here next week. Thanks for the input

I really love changing the oil filter in a standing position! Went with Mobil 1 and Wix oil/air filters...

Just curious if your Mobil 1 containers list the Chrysler spec. I haven't been using it because it hasn't been approved yet for the spec. I just never want to give Chrysler any reason to deny a claim. Yes I know the chances of that are extremely small, but there are many good synthetic oils that do carry the Chrysler cert so I choose to use those until Mobil 1 gets approved.

M1 almost assuredly exceeds ms6395. But I don't think Mobil is bothering to apply.

The Mobil conventionals have the cert. (Mobil 5000, if I remember correctly)

If your changing under 5000 mile or less than 6 months, then the Mobil 5000 or Pennzoil yellow bottle can be used with confidence.

I would use PYB if I could find it cheaper than M1.

Unless you're someplace ridiculously dusty then
I'd leave the air filter alone. They get more efficient with use.

What does your manual say for air filters?

Yep, the Mobil conventional carries the Chrysler cert. the synthetics do not. Unless you get a great deal on Mobil 1 I just don't feel its worth it to use an oil that is not certified when the vehicle is covered by the factory warranty. With 100% certainty I know that Mobil 1 is good and will definitely not cause any problems. Just a legal technicality that keeps me from using it. I typically use penzoil synthetics in the jku every 5000 miles. I now have over 41,000 problem free miles in my January 2012 build jku.

Mobil is supposedly waiting for the right moment to conduct the test with Chrysler. The test requires 2 full years in an effort to see the results over each season. Mobil claims they and Chrysler discussed this in January 2012 however haven't decide on a start date. This is on the Mobil website.
Knowing manufacturers, they are working on something now, then they will release it. Not likely they will advertise up front that they are working on a formula that is Chrysler acceptable. Not to mention, Mobil 1 is in bed with GM. That might slow things a bit.

MS6395 is nothing spectacular or special. Look at the PDSs of the oils that meet it. Then compare those to the certs already on M1. It might be politics or butthurt but it's not the quality of M1 preventing the approval.

My 08 came factory filled with Mobil-whatever and has had a steady diet of M1. Mainly because I get it for under $5 a quart making it a no brainer.

That being said, there is a killer rebate right now from SOPUS on pennzoil platinum and ultra giving a discount on shell gas. I'll be stocking up this weekend!

So is MS6395 the required oil approved by Chrysler/Jeep? I guess I'd better check what I've been using.

The recommendation is oils that meet ms6395.

Meet is the operational word.

From my manual:

Engine Oil Selection
For best performance and maximum protection for all engines under all types of operating conditions, the manufacturer recommends engine oils that are API Cer- tified and meet the requirements of DaimlerChrysler Material Standard MS-6395.

Oils are so good these days that most any quality brand oil won't let you down, provided you keep it in the safe zone on the dipstick.
