Default Why is it so expensive to get my Diff oil changed?

I dropped the Jeep off for it's warranty preserving checkup. I inquired about what it would cost to have my differential fluid changed. I was quoted ~$300 for the front and rear. I can't help but think they are trying to !@#$% me over I said no thank you and will just beg one of my friends to let me use their drive way. I wish I could work on the Jeep in the parking garage of my apartment. I know how to change diff oil and can't for the life of me understand why they are charging so much. I'm going to be taking it the hour to my old shop until me and the wife get a house.

great question! I have often wondered this too. Fluid is expensive but not that expensive.

That was probably about 2 hours labor charge plus the oil which is around 8 bucks a quart plus or minus. They might charge for the cleaner and the silicone as well. Best bet is do like you said and do it yourself.

Forty dollars or less for supplies and less than an hour of your time and you can freshen up those diffs yourself.

I changed mine this weekend. It took about a half an hour and requires less skill than changing your oil. $41 gets you four quarts of mobil 1. That plus a 3/8 drive ratchet and extension is all it takes.

I bought my Jeep used, and to keep the warranty coverage, I need to get it serviced at a Jeep dealership or Carmax for oil changes.
