Default Windshield Removal?

I need to pull the front windshield out of the frame for painting.

Any pointers?

Do I need a professional to re-install it?

First off....I don't know why you feel the need to remove the windshield to paint your rig. I used to work for a body shop and we never used to do that. Just mask everything off. But if you still want to remove it, you can reinstall it yourself. They make a flexible tool that you use to put the glass into the molding. I remember not having that tool and and using something else that is very thin but still rigid enough. It may have been a stir stick. Anyway, you can do it yourself. But like I say, if you are good at masking there is no need.

Well, I looked at it extensively and there is no rubber surround like every other windshield!!!

It appears as though it's "glued" in there.......almost pressed into position????

The reason that I want to fully remove the windshield, is so that there is no white left over when it's all said and done. It would look good, and most people may not notice, but I would......

Take it to the local glass shop. They can get it out with out damage. I tried on my old car and ended up paying for a new one. Worth the extra money to have it done right. Thats my 2cents. BTW looked at your build are you going for the J8 look? Keep the pics comeing

Lots of later vehicles' windshields are not set in rubber seals like the old days. They are glued in. And, with today's designs, the glass provides some structural integrity.

I think taking it to a shop is going to be the final verdict.

I like the look of the J8, but I don't really know if I am going to go with all the white lettering and numbers......Just love the look of the OD!

It'll be pretty much the same color as my scooter in one of the first pics.

I know what you mean with the lettering. but the real J8 do not have lettering. I have seen a few pics from overseas and none have it. They are painted mormal colors too haha. what better camo could you want. Haha. No im not tring to jack the thread. Now that your taken it to a shop you have some recourse if it gets damaged or the glass is busted during take out or install. That will help you if you are on budget. But have one question for you? What are you doing about your VIN stickers are you just going to leave them off.

98jeepboy:

For the VIN.......I have only ran across one, it's riveted to the plastic, drivers side by the front window........no others so far

There are 2 stickers on the drivers side door jam....I am going to heat them up with a heat gun(I have one for covering model airplanes..gets f'in hot!)and try to keep them, I don't know how well it's going to work, but at least I will have them.......these two are the tire pressure one and the other is the build info.

The windshield is installed with hi-strength urethane adhesive, and as Ronjenx said it is a structural component of the jeep's body. There is an 80% chance the glass will be chipped or cracked upon removal. The JK windshield is extremely close to the frame on all sides. The glass shop will not assume responsibility for breakage so be prepared to buy another glass. As for your VIN sticker and data tags they ARE NOT removable, either cold or with a heat gun. Fine line them when painting, it won't be near as noticable as not having a VIN sticker. Some states registration procedures include a visual inspection of the VIN sticker when initially registering the vehicle, if it's not there your vehicle has to be run thru every stolen car database in the country.... been there. The VIN sticker, even when successfuly pulled off in one piece leaves the data (which is printed on the BACK side) on the vehicle and the sticker itself reads VOID.
