Anyone replaced their own windshield? How difficult was it? If not, anyone in the local area recommend a good place to get it done? I called Apple Auto Glass and was quoted $378 installed. Dealer wants $255 for the window only, and Jeepglass_com is $210 delivered.
Figuring if I need a new windshield every year, maybe it's like changing your oil and I should do it myself.

 

dont you have glass coverage i broke mine called my insurance company and made a claim and had the glass company came to my house and put in a new one didnt cost me a dime

 

If you have zero comp, you can get new glass for free. Check your insurance. Also, most standard insurance policies for Jeeps carry a 1-free windshield replacement per year in the coverage.

 

I have a $150 deductible on comprehensive. Does making too many comprehensive claims affect your insurance rates? I have a clean record and no claims, but I'm wondering if the insurance company needs to replace a window a year - do they drop you, or raise your rates? Or is this only what happens when you get too many speeding tickets, etc?

 

Each company is different. But the short answer is yes, making enough claims eventually affects your premiums.

But with so much competition, I doubt any of them will raise your rates for a single auto glass replacement claim.

 

X2. The more claims you make the more likely your premiums go up. (large claims like $10,000 motor and trans replacements will affect it more). If a windshield replacement effects the premium it wont be much.

 

I replaced 5 windshields in one year. Lots of construction in my area that year. No negetive. effects on insurrance. . I have replaced a couple since then. One of them was my Jeep.

 

Mine was replaced free on insurance also, but to chime in on your question of DIY replacement, I'd make sure you source and use plenty of the right sealant. It's the kind of job many of us feel is easy until the thing leaks, pees and whistles, and then realise should have had the glass tech guy do it properly. my 2cents

 

I know in Alberta they insurance companies will not cover windshields. It's additional coverage. Reason being they don't use salt there in the winter. Too cold Just sand. (Talk to anyone there and they will tell you it's crushed stone. There's not alot of windshields in Alberta that are totally intact/no cracks)

 

I have replaced several windshields myself. But with the tight tolerances and no trim I would not even attempt to replace My own glass.
