X model offroad capabilities
X10 on what everybody else has said about tires. It should be your first and formost investment to your X if you want to get that little "extra" out of it off road.
With good tires, a shovel, and a 2 ton come-a-long, that can be all you need to have all kinds of fun.
Go for it......ya gotta get stuck sooner or later...!!!

Check these 2 links out. Most of us are running X's, only a couple of rubi's in the bunch.
I've not been let down by mine yet. Had to use the winch but it was bad.

I 100% agree!!!
My X is awesome.
I added a lunchbox locker in the front, but for all but the most extreme stuff (Check out my website) the lockers are just convenience. The 4:1 rubi trans case is, again, nice to hqve, but not necessary (yes I want one).
For deep mud or big rocks you will need lockers. Other than that you will be shocked at what the thing will do. Go out and your taste in trails will tell you what to upgrade first.
Tire because they really do perform, and they just look cool.
A lift, because it really does help, and it looks cool.
A winch, more because it looks cool than anything else, and it does help sometimes...
Bumpers because they look cool...
Wheels because they look cool.
Rock rails if you are in the rocks....These are a must to avoid realy nasty damage...
Depending on the type of wheeling you want to do, locker will make the experience much more enjoyable, but you can't see them, so only get those if you really need them.
I am still shocked at what this X can do.
See ya on the trails!

One thing it wouldn't hurt to have as a minimum as well as snatch-straps is a hand-winch (with plenty of spare sheer-bolts), which should fit nicely in the underfloor locker at the back for the more compact models. Just don't get the cheapies you see on ebay for 30 bucks!
Just in case you find yourself stuck when you're out alone by yourself. Yes, they are hard work and you'll end up with arms like The Hulk, but they do have the advantage that they can pull you from the front, back, or either side depending on how you're stuck. Good peace of mind anyway.

Still learning the capabilities of my stock X. 3.73 gearing and 32" SRA tires. Went out on a trail yesterday, put her in 4 low, 1st gear and let her idle her way back up the trail. Climbed a pretty good angle and had to clear a couple of obstacles all while idling. Never missed a beat, no stalling, and climbed over everything I pointed her at. Average speed was 1.6 mph. Impressive what these can handle stock.
