That is true, its the best investment I have made.

I don't disagree that a winch would be useful but winches are priced outside my budget right now. A winch being >$1000.00 plus cost of a new front bumper. It's definitely in my plans but probably not for another year. If I had had better tires and a couple inches of lift I probably would have been through that mess no problem - either that or I would have hydrolocked my motor, in which case a winch probably would have come in handy...

The choice is always yours, but a lift and bigger, better tires will only get you in deeper, the winch will get you home...Welcome to the wonderful world of J.E.E.P (Just Empty Every Pocket)

On a side note, I see a brand new WARN M8000 on EJC forum for only $600, a winch plate for that winch would be another $100-200....just food for thought.

Lots of lift and much bigger tires, guess which got me out

B-man's right for the price of a winch and winch plate you would be better suited to wheelin' in most of Alberta. I have been saved by the winch more than any other modification.....I have been winched out by a bright orange YJ once or twice (local club member Mudjunkie)..... many club's have that as a requirement for minimum gear - 90% of our members have one.

Well....I am looking at investing in a bumper and winch for the JK...after this happened to my truck yesterday! I got almost new Toyo M/T's they dug really good to good that I sunk to the axles and my front diff got hung up on a broken log bedded in the road.... Could have used the JK and winched my truck out....but had to get AMA out to winch at $3/km off road...51km back in the bush

So, the consensus is that a winch is a really good thing to have. What about mounting it? Don't you need a new front bumper in order to mount a winch? And throwing a bumper and winch on is going to weigh down the front end which will mean I'll end up having to spend money on some sort of lift anyways won't I?

You dont need a new front bumper, you can get a mount to fit the one you have. An 8000lb winch isn't enough to weigh down the front of your Jeep, you won't see any real sag at all...My JK didn't budge a bit with the heavier bumper and winch...

Pictured before the lift, with bumpers, winch & 33" tires...
