Anyone have proof of higher jku tow capacity outside the USA?

I have a 19' fish/ski boat that I tow regularly with my wrangler, sometimes for 3+hours at a time on the highway. My 2010 2-door Jeep has stock suspension and stock tires and no engine mods. I constantly keep an eye on the temp gauge, but it never budges past where it usually sits when I am just driving the Jeep. I have never weighed the boat and trailer package when it is loaded, but I am sure with full fuel, two batteries, and my fishing gear I am probably at or near 4,000 lbs. I love towing with my Jeep because I can see both of my trailer tires in my side mirrors. This makes it easy to keep an eye on them ans see how they are riding and if there is a problem happening back there. I live in Massachusetts and we do have some pretty steep inclines and declines, but the 3.8 does a fine job towing my boat. I don't have any sway issues on the highway being passed by any large trucks and it feels stable at all times. However, I always need to be vigilant that the tow is longer and wider than the vehicle, and I need to drive very proactively and defensively.

These figures are from the Jeep Australia Website for the Wrangler Unlimited Sport; the Rubi figures are identical (except that the Rubi doesn't come with the diesel option here). All weights are in kilograms (1kg=2.2lb)
3.6L VVT 24V V6 petrol with 6-speed Manual Transmission
Max Braked Gross Trailer Weight(6) (kg)
2,200
Max Tongue Down Load (kg)
220
3.6L VVT 24V V6 petrol with 5-speed Automatic Transmission
Max Braked Gross Trailer Weight(6) (kg)
2,200
Max Tongue Down Load (kg)
220
2.8L CRD DOHC 16V I-4 turbo diesel automatic
Max Braked Gross Trailer Weight(6) (kg)
2,000
Max Tongue Down Load (kg)
200
2.8L CRD DOHC 16V I-4 turbo diesel manual
Max Braked Gross Trailer Weight(6) (kg)
2,300
Max Tongue Down Load (kg)
230
The figure for the manual diesel is an interesting anomaly; slightly higher loads even though the diesel motor is detuned for the manuals as the torque was too much for the clutches.
Over here, towing capacity isn't so much an indication on the physical limits to a particular vehicle's engineering and design but rather is legislated to certain maximums including calculations using a formula that takes into account the vehicle's tare weight & GVM. So a smaller but heavier vehicle with a smaller motor and lighter duty suspension may have a higher towing capacity than the larger but lighter canvas-roofed Wrangler for example.

Thank you thank you thank you. Those hard actual numbers are exactly the kind of information I was looking for. 2200kg is about 4840 pounds. This would be strong evidence that the value given for the US is artificially low for some reason.

Most vehicles are over engineered for their intended use. Chrysler most likely gave the tow rating a lower number in North Amarica to save itself some big headaches. If your rig is rated for 3500 lb, then some people will tow way more than that (1000-1500 lb more). Human nature is to push the limits in whatever you are doing.
Maybe thoise numbers are for off road driving? I have a 2dr, and dont plan on towing more than 2000 lb.

Hi, this is my first post, so just a quick note. I have just bought a 2012 2 door and the towing limit is 1000kg or 2200ibs for the UK
2.8 CRD Sahara.
I was told it is something to do with euro 5 emissions, I don't tow so it was not important in my decision to buy the JK
Hope this helps

I was after real official numbers for the JKU. So far here is what I learned for the gas powered 4-door wrangler:
Sweden gives 2000kg for the 3.73 rear and 1000kg for the 3.21 rear
Australia gives 2200kg.
Any others? How about England, Germany, etc.

FYI - Jeep probably has websites for those countries so you can probably find them there. I know Jeep Australia does.
Actually, here you go:

OK, here is what we've learned so far with hard facts, not rumors. Regarding the 2012 JKU with the 3.6 engine towing capacity with a braked trailer:
USA - 3500 pounds (1587 kg)
Sweden - 4400 pounds (2000 kg)
Germany - 4400 pounds (2000 kg)
England - 4400 pounds (2000 kg)
Australia - 4800 pounds (2200 kg)
Based on this, I will feel comfortable towing a small toy hauler with a total loaded weight of around 4400 pounds. That 900 pound increase over the USA rated weight opens up many more possibilities as to what trailers are available. I wish someone just had the absolute real answer about why the US limits the JKU to 3500.
