Canada Threatens Legal Action Over Jeep Compass Production Shift

Just this week, Stellantis announced that it would be moving Jeep Compass production to the U.S., but that isn’t settling well with Canadian officials.

As most are well aware, tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on imported automobiles and associated components coming into the U.S. were implemented months ago, and have since prompted more than one automaker to switch up supply chains or make plans to shift production to the states. That includes Stellantis, which just announced that it plans to move production of the Jeep Compass from its plant in Ontario, Canada, to Illinois, which is part of a multi-billion dollar investment in its U.S. business. However, Stellantis is now facing potential legal problems over that decision.

According to BBC News, Canada now plans to seek legal action against Stellantis if it does indeed follow through with its plans to move Jeep Compass production to the U.S., news that comes from the country’s Industry Minister Mélanie Joly. She stated that the automaker had received financial support in the form of “billions of dollars” from Canadian officials for its Brampton plant, and that it made a “legally binding” commitment to stay there as a result.

Joly added that Canada will “exercise all options, including legal,” if Stellantis does indeed shift Jeep Compass production out of that same facility. In response, Stellantis did say that it plans to continue utilizing the Brampton plant, but didn’t disclose what those plans might be – nor what products might be built there after Compass production moves. “We were there for the company in 2009 to pull it back from the brink of bankruptcy, and now we expect you to be there for Canadians,” Joly said.

“Canada is very important to us. We have plans for Brampton and will share them upon further discussions with the Canadian government,” a Stellantis spokesperson said, adding that the automaker is investing in its Windsor plant in Canada to “support increased demand” for the Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Charger Scat Pack, a move that will also result in the addition of 1,500 new jobs there.

Stellantis announced that production of the third-generation Jeep Compass for North America would happen at the Brampton Plant in late 2023, while models destined for Europe are built in Italy. The automaker now plans to revamp its shuttered Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois – which was previously slated to build an all-new mid-size Ram pickup – beginning in late 2026 or early 2027.
