Guy Tests Soda as Fuel in His Car, Inevitable Happens

Soft drinks have properties that gasoline does not. Namely a chemical composition that can destroy your engine.

Answering a question that we’re sure no one has asked is a YouTuber who goes by the name of TechRax. That question? What happens when you fill up your car with soda instead of gasoline. “We’re gonna do it and see what happens!”

Well, he does, and they did see what happened. Residual fuel in the rails and in the tank obviously keep the car running for a little bit as the car did have fuel already in it. Being that the engine wasn’t running on the sugary concoction alone, it ran just fine for the first minute or so. But then the soda and gasoline started to mix.

JK-Forum - Bill for Soda in Gas Tank

“I think it’s the carbonation, you can hear it bubbling or something… OH the car is slowing down.” After just a few blocks of driving, the first real issues start to creep up. First, a very noticeable bog, then the car feeling jittery and finally, it shuts down. Efforts to re-start it are futile. But that’s not the very end of this experiment. TechRex wanted to find out if it just wouldn’t run on soda, or if it actually damaged parts of the car.

Estimate repair costs from a mechanic were more than $1,000 to repair the fuel system. Injectors would have been clogged and gummed up, and the fuel pump possibly was damaged due to soda not having the lubricating properties of gasoline. “I want to show you just how much it takes to fix an issue like this,” TechRex states. While this sounds similar to what may happen if you accidentally swap diesel for gasoline or vice versa, we’re happy that soda isn’t an option at one of the pumps. Besides, soda is actually more expensive per gallon than gasoline, so we’ll stick with the stuff that works.
