New QC Law...Need Winter Tires
The draft regulation, published on July 9, 2008 in the Gazette officielle du Québec, defines tires specifically designed for winter driving as those that meet one of the following criteria prior to December 15, 2014:
* Tires on which one of the following inscriptions appear: Arctic, Blizzard, Ice, LT, Snow (but not mud and snow), Stud or Winter.
or
* Tires on which the icon representing a mountain with a superimposed snowflake appears.
Starting on December 15, 2014, the draft regulation specifies that only those tires on which the icon representing the mountain with the superimposed snowflake appears shall be considered to be winter tires.

FYI- I'll be going from a 255/75R17 to 265/75R16 and i'm considering the Yoko Geolander I/T G072. I live in the country (Wakefield for those in the Ottawa/Outaouais area) and drive 40 minutes to work. Our roads are never plowed and last year, I never had any problems with my stock goodyear wrangler All Season tires. This new law is upsetting, I was saving money to get myself a better set of offroading M+S tires that I could also use in winter.
Perhaps there will also be criminal charges if you are in an accident and you don't have the winter tires. Someone who doesn't end up in a ditch or an accident can probably not worry about this law. Unfortunately few people plan on going into the ditch or having an accident.
I'm not certain if a insurance company could refuse to cover your accident coverage if you not using the correct legal tires, but it may be something that may happen.

"LT" tires will be legal in Quebec.

Hi there Girlie, I'm in Aylmer so yes I know where you're coming from. Personally I'm going to get myself a set of BFG KO's 285/70-17's from Frisbee's. I've been told that I can use these year round so that's likely what I'll be doing....offsetting the cost by trying to sell my stock wranglers. I'll also be using the stock rims because I dont want to fork over another $500 for the sensors on the new wheels.
I am also considering getting the BFG AT KO's. How much is Frisbee selling them for? I've been looking at different options. I'm still undecided if I want to fork out the cash for strictly winter tires and winter rims (16'') or just buy 4 of the BFG and like you, try to sell my OEM tires. Canadian Tire sells the Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT which has the severe snow condition symbol and they often have a 25% sale. Not the best tire, but could be an option. If I downsize to 16", that means I need 5 tires/rims. But I also do quite a bit of mileage (40,000km/year). I don't know anymore what would be more worthwile (swap winter/summer or keep the same year round).

I've also found during my research that there is not much options available to me in my stock size (255/75/R17). I wish Quebec would wait until tire manufacturers made more available sizes before putting this law mandatory.
In the M+S tires, the ones I have found admissible are (they have the severe winter condition symbol):
BFG All Terrain T/A KO
Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT
ProComp All Terrain
Wrangler Silent Armor
Really, I don't recall how much Frisbee's was asking for the KO's. I was there more to talk to them about tire size options at the time. I also considered going with 16" rims and tires but like I mentioned earlier, those stupid tire pressure sensors add about $400-500 for the package....and that wasn't worth it for me and no, I don't want to live with the little yellow light on the dash.
And no, the KO's dont come in the stock size...that sucks I know The closest size is 285/70-17 which they say shouldn't throw things off too badly. Although it's recommended that you go with a narrower tire for the winter, I think it'll look really silly on the Jeep. Besides, I'm trying to convince my wife to get the 2" lift and a 33" tire would look better with the extra 2 inches. But that's just me.
If you do 40k/year though you might be better going with 2 sets. Although whether you wear 100% through one set of tires or 50% through 2. Really, in the end its all the same.

Either way, having to buy tires for winter is a PITA. I did just fine with my stock Wranglers last winter, and we all know how much snow we got! I pulled out a few cars in the Wakefield/Edelweiss area and I never got stuck, or lost control of the jeep. Since manufacturers are not yet making many tires in my stock size, I hate having to spend all this money now on choices I don't want, but am now required to buy because of this law.
I called this Goodyear garage I used to go all the time before the jeep. They can sell me the Wrangler Silent Armor M+S for $224 each. If you buy 4, they give you $100 off. They offer it in my stock size, so that may be my best option for now. It's apparently pretty good in snow/ice and thread mileage up to 80 000km, so about 2 years for me. For the BFG, I could do either 245/75R17 (1.8% too fast on speedo) or 265/70/R17 (1.4% too fast on speedo). 1010tires advertises BFG at $245 and $255 each.
Should I be concerned that the BFG are LT and my current tires are P? I thought you coulnd't swap from P to LT, or is it vice versa?
Mines an 08 4-door X. According to my dealer some came with them and some didn't. If you have metal or silver valve caps and an indicator light in the dash, you have the sensors too (according to the dealer). Although I just found out that the sensors are only $250 not $500 as I was initially told, I think it still makes more sense for me to go with the stock rim.
There's actually a thread going somewhere here on the Silent Armour and the consensus is that they're a good tire.
I think going from P to LT is ok. But in either case, if the tire has the snowflake symbol, you're ok!!!
There's a good tire size calculator here:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
...yes I have a Miata too.....sue me but I love my Miata too
My BFG 285/70-17's that I'm going to go with are 2% larger which is higher than the 1% recommended but within the 'danger zone' of >3% where you start running into issues with the electronics (again according to the dealer). From what I'm hearing here on the forums, this size isn't a problem.
