Okay, so the warm weather is coming and I want to be able to take off my doors this year. I know I have seen other Jeeps on the road without mirrors so I want to see what the law is.

I found the following section of the Ontario Highway Act. Which indicated that I need a mirror to see to the rear, which my windshield mounted mirror would do. Am I missing anything or can I just remove my doors and be good to go?

66. (1) Every motor vehicle other than a motorcycle shall be equipped with,

(a) a device for cleaning rain, snow and other moisture from the windshield so constructed as to be controlled or operated by the driver;

(b) a mirror or mirrors securely attached to the vehicle and placed in such a position as to afford the driver a clearly reflected view of the roadway in the rear, or of any vehicle approaching from the rear. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 66 (1).

 

technically you can get a ticket for having no side mrrors... but you can get brackets from... Daystar i think that allows you to relocate your mirros when you take the doors off.

as far as a rear view mirror goes... big trucks dont have rear views and i was always under the impression that they werent required...

 

You must have your driver side mirror. The passenger dosn't matter. I know this because i have some friends into the Euro tuner stuff and they actually shave there mirrors off the passenger side. and the rearview im not sure but rando made a good point

 

I think this one is also one of those laws that is "kinda" enforced...i got pulled over for speeding last summer without the doors or mirrors and the officer didn't mention a thing...either way I think i might look into getting relocation brackets just incase...

 

Alright, I'll step in as this is what I do for a living.....I am in Law Enforcement and deal daily with vehicles and highway traffic act offences.

One mirror in any position that affords a clear view of the rear of the vehicle and the ability to see oncoming rear travel traffic.

If you are getting bothered by the long arm of the law and are in a tuner car....well.....sorry to say it....but you're in a tuner car....need I say more? No offence to you UnlimitedX but its a sad truth that those cars get targeted alot.

On the other statement that it is one of those laws that are loosely enforced, yes that can be true, but if you are getting tagged frequently for a variety of other offences and are becoming that "Habitual Offender" guy.....then yeah, you'll get nailed on that to....but only if you have no mirrors at all.

I'm very well versed with the Ontario HTA and federal regs in this matter
no vehicle can be sold in canada with out at least 1 external mirror on the driver side.
get a mirror don't give the cop a reason
u get a ticket and ur looking at time to go to court just to say well I have a rear view mirror. was it worth it and when the officer says the view of the rear mirror was obstructed by the back window or the roll bar or passenger
the guy wearing the uniform is going to win and your going to pay just get a mirror for the maximum cost of a tank of gas why not.

it takes 1 time to do a lane change and forget to shoulder check and wham (i hope that doesn't happen to anyone)

a police officer needs probable cause to stop u for for a road side check
a police officer has free will and free judgment while on patrol

if u enjoy digging out ur wallet and registration and insurance and giving up 15 minutes and talking to a public servant who u are paying anyhow and u just want to see what kind of person gets ur tax money
also at that point he is probably sniffing out ur driving record crimnal record warrants both provincial court and private claims against u
your credit report you high school report and education record (i'm kidding) but based on what he finds out about u on his computer or though dispatch maybe why u get a ticket for no mirror
perhaps it was that rolling stop that u made he may let go or the squawking of a tire ya did awhile back u might not get that ticket , or the call someone made about ur perceived driving habits from their cell phone cause we have lots of jealous (i mean do gooders out there)and they police catch up to u well it may not be the ticket for the offense u did but it will be fore something silly like u not having a mirror

perhaps pulling u over for no mirror is his way of doing a breath check or perhaps he will want to search ur vehicle for open alcohol containers ( i keep rubbing alcohol in my center console (not really but as a teen i did lol)
mayeb he finds that tire iron during the search asks u a question like were u going to use this on me?

same applies for side window tint on windows directly to the left and right of the driver
those ricer windsheild squirters that light up
license plate frames with lights
trailer hitch obstructing view of plate
mud on plates obstructing view
mud on windows obstructing view
no license plate light
these are known as cash grab tickets, no body argues cause the cost is low no points involved , they teach people that not to mess with the home town police.
if ur name is flagged on the computer it is not uncommon to get this ticket 2 or 3 times with in same summer

I live in Trenton it is opp territory not so bad but before it was opp look out. there is a slightly bigger town to the east coughbllvllcough they will get u for no mirror if u have the doors off with no mirror guaranteed!

i carry my mirror in the jeep as soon as the soft top goes on.
yes the rear view mirror is a mirror but come on have u ever tried to argue the law with a cop. the next words u will here are "tow truck" " safety inspection detainment and on a Friday night that sux.

I'm not saying zeero is wrong

I just think there is a cloud and that cloud is called officer judgment it is the grey area of the law that is there to frustrate some that desrve it and also there to let other know who really is the ultimate boss on the roads

...hahaha....it is true to an extent....I'm the guy you'll argue with on the roadside....and yes, I will say "tow-truck" at the slightest bit of argument...

 

Thanks for the responses. Technically I don't need mirrors, but as a semi-professional driver I realize how useful they are.

Still undecided if I am going to get a set of relocation brackets or not.

you can make something easy check out the builder craft fair angle bracket cut down drilled and a motor cycle mirror from Canadian tire with nylon lock nut. i'm thinking 30 minutes to make. less that 25$
or u can try getting stick on dome(wide angle) mirrors and stick them on your out board vents then they are adjustable and u can see clearly to the sides and rear and they are always there.
who uses vents when doors / top is off?

this mod will cost less than 3$ from walmart

 

I just took my doors off and drove by a few police cruisers yesterday. They didn't seem to mind.
