All depends on how much time you have.

Propane is great for most as the time for charcoal is much longer... but as far as taste goes charcoal rules

The weber performer: propane start lump charcoal. I grill at least 200 nights a year and often for breakfast on weekends. I don't know where the 10 dollars per charcoal use guy is buying his charcoal buy I buy a 50 pound bag for $27.00 it lasts at least two months. (about 40 nights) Also if you close the grill vents when you are done you can reuse 60% if the lump coal the next time you grill. Which is a big reason to go with lump.
It's also much easier to control the temperature of lump coals. Once briquettes get start to cool it is almost impossible to raise the temperature again. Hardwood gets much hotter as well so it's good for seared tuna etc.

If you had a few simple tools you wouldn't be.

I am a member of the daul capable club. Weeknights I normally use gas, just because it is faster, and I can get on with the rest of my busy nigth (18M son, part time school, full time Air Force). However, I can't wait for the weekend when I can fire up the webber and relax while it gets ready. There are sometimes the coals just burn down while I am relaxing, sure I am waisting some, but the smell while I am playing in the yard with my boy is worth the few bucks.

I also use both. I do prefer the propane when using the bbq as an oven just cuz i'm lazy and find it easier to maintain a constant temp over a long period. But you can't beat a good steak done over charcoal.
