Default Winter At Green Ridge

Anyone do any winter camping at Green Ridge (MD)? It's a nice drive and I've done some winter backpacking there twice. Thinking of going again.

Also done some winter camping at Wolf Gap on the VA, WV line (Great North Mountain in GWNF). It's a fairly easy drive for a jeep on the logging roads, but it's scenic and there is some good hiking.

Anyone interested? I'm pretty experienced, if that's a concern.

Well, for Green Ridge, there are a few shelters you can hike to and camp out there. It's rather scenic when there's snow on the ground, so I'm thinking an out and back overnight at one of those and then doing the trail in the jeep. Actually, we wouldn't need an "out and back" with two jeeps we can use to shuttle. I've never seen the jeep road much in the winter and I'm sure there are a few nice vistas with the foliage gone. Did two overnight backpacks down the bottom near the creek all the way to C&O canal. One in Feb and one in April. It snowed both times. Pretty.

Wolf Gap is much the same as fare as roads, but it's nice in the winter. Campground is at the base of the rock and you hike an old jeep road up to an old fire tower site to get to the ridge trail to the summit. The top of the mountain is like Old Rag mountain in Va. Oh, also, there is a PATC cabin on one of the trails called Signal Knob cabin. It's an old forest service station and I rented it once. Always wanted to do it in winter. I know there are jeep trails there because when I rented it and backpacked up to it (3 hours in summer), a HUGE off road group came roaring past at 2 o'clock in the morning. there. You can look up the cabin on the PATC website.

Either place can be a day trip if we leave early enough in the am. The cabin, of course, is a different story. Neither trip is "crawling" but my jeep isn't a crawler. For that, there's always Rausch Creek. If you're interested, we can meet for beers sometime. I only live in Fells Point. I've got maps and all kinds of stuff. Just let me know.

Easy enough! Just let me know. I'm out and about all over the place at all times of the year, so, whenever you're game, just let me know and then we can plan something.

Default Greenridge Day Trip

I'm planning a day trip to Greenridge on Sunday the 16th if anyone's interested. Heading up from VA, hit East Valley and Stafford trails, maybe a few stream crossings, lunch, then heading back home.

Just a trail ride. I'm looking at getting up there between 9 & 10 and leaving by 2 or 3. It's been about 10 years since I've been up there wheeling, I go up every year Hunting., I just haven't seen the trails in a while. I just wanted to get my new JK out on some trails with the family.

EDIT: Great idea. Too bad I can't make it. Have to work Sunday, but I'm off and could make it on Saturday the 15th.

I'm interested in the 15th. I've been there several times but never in the winter. Some snow could make things interesting!! Im not much for the camping in the winter but I'm up for a trail ride. (my wife may not be, she hates wheeling in the cold but thats ok ill leave her and bring the dog, the dog doesnt talk back. Lol)Anyway keep me posted, I live in Hagerstown and could meet up with you guys on the way there.

My wife doesn't mind wheeling in the cold....just as long as SHE'S not cold! Guess the top stays on? If there's snow on the ground, its quite the grand view from the road at log roller's hill. I've been there more in the winter than I have in the summer. I've just never driven the off road trail in the winter. This would be a good trail ride and then find a place for some beers.

Unfortunately, I couldn't make it on the 16th due to shiftwork. But, the 15th would be a go.
