Jeep wanted to charge me 2700 dollars to fix my rear diff and that was not even a guarantee it was going to fix the problems... here is what the inside of my rear diff looked like!!!

Currently what i believe happened was the pinion seal was leaking before the last wheeling trip... i knew about it and was going to replace the next weekend which would have been well tomorrow... well I believe this is where I got water into my diff and with that the pinion seal completely started to fail because on my way to work in the morning it started making a humming noise i knew something was not right.. got to work and said alright on the way home if it is doing it again its going straight to the shop... on the way home it started to get worse and then when it down shifted to 1st gear it made a clunking noise and felt like the trans was slipping... I was talking to cj that went jk the whole time we were talking things through to test... i got close to the jeep dealership and got the aroma of gear oil i was like shit not good i am going straight to the dealership which was very very close to where i was. pulled into the dealership got to the parking lot going about 5 mph in first gear boom!!!! (FYI i have an automatic) loud noise that was my rear drive shaft falling off but it did not break ... with the vibrations and what not with the pinion bearing going bad it loosened the pinion nut off the pinion... which mind you was put on with 300 fps of torque!! but no lock tight... well when when the drive shaft came off it locked up the rear axle and it was done for.... tried to throw it in 4wd and drive forward no luck the rear tires would not move.... but the goofy part is they were able to drive the jeep in reverse with no problems....

that is my diagnosis from what i have seen so far...

Why would the dealer not recommend a used axle in the first place? I dont get the reason they wouldnt try to help a customer out, instead they recommend a fix that "may not work". I have worked in dealerships for the past 10 years, mostly sales but I have worked a couple years in service and dont understand their thinking. Either way sounds like you got a great deal. Now you need to get that fixed so you can make it to the S&G in Mishawaka!

I will do my best man!!!

Yeah they actually told me to see if i could get a used axle. which I did and well he who will not be named!! hooked me up and saved my butt big time. The Dealer was even wiling to take 20% off the total bill to help me out because it was going to cost so much if i decided to have them replace everything in the rear diff. the service manager was actually very helpful in the whole thing.. I know all of the service guys and techs even when my jeep broke down at the dealership they helped me get the jeep out of the way. Also they gave me a ride home and picked me up in the morning to come get a rental car. they were straight forward with me though he said before he even opened up the diff cover he said i am 99.9% sure something is messed up with your ring and pinion because when i spin your pinion it will go in reverse but will not go forward.

Regardless I wish they could have been able to warranty the work but I have a 4.5 inch aev lift with all the control arms, front and rear aftermarket drive shafts. of course they are not going to warranty my jeep i could be pissed off all I want and yell at them but ain't gonna get me anywhere. I know i voided warranty's gotta live with it.. I will get this all worked out and the jeep back on the road as fast as possible becuase it sucks driving a dam rental car!!! FML!!!

I had the same thing happen to me when I got some water in the rear diff. i got lucky when i heard it coming home from the badlands. I took the rear driveshaft out and drove home in 4wd. Same exact thing just less catastrophic. Hear was a pic of my diff. Also if you need any parts for the rear let me know. I am installing 4.10s and an arb in my jeep now.
