Best 1911
Without a doubt, I do not think that you can get a better 1911 for your money than a Kimber. I own a few 1911s, and the Kimber Custom Stainless II is heads above the rest. I love it. I have put thousands of rounds through this weapon and have had no issues. Someone previously mentioned a Les Baer 1911. Those are beautiful pistols. They are top of the line, but you are going to pay for it. You probably will not find a new Les Baer under $1,500.
I realize that replacement costs would be way in excess of $1500 but, for me I love my 1919 Colt built 1911 (not A1) and just can't beat the original imo.
The only thing I added was the Pachmayr grips (and still have the original 1919 diamonds) since they feel great.
The steel and feel of the almost 100 year old gun for me is just light years better than any copy I have felt or shot.

Thanks for the replys. I was pretty set on the Kimber before I started the thread and y'all helped to confirm. I have a very close friend who is a gunsmith (Mostly long guns though, he builds sniper rifles for swat teams) and he can help/assist me with any further customization I choose. (and its all free
)
Now I have to decide on the model? I prefer all black weapons, but since this will not be a carry piece I might go with an attractive stainless model!

For your price range, I would go with a Kimber. I have a Ultra Tactical for my daily, and also have an SIS Pro. Both are great guns.
If your price range was a little higher, I would go with a Les Bear or STI!! But you can't go wrong with any of the Kimbers.
