Could one of you CJ buffs take a look at this CJ and give your opinion on it? The poster doesn't have a lot of info but its the only one I've found in my price range and close to me.

it does have sbc as for tranny could not tell you the body appears from the pics to be rust free I cannot tell if the rear has been change to 1 piece axles or not or a complete rear end change to a dana 44 n/t stock would be amc 20 w/ 2 piece axles n/t I would go look at it and check the frame rear section for rust and rot from the pics I would go look at it if I had the money
Cool thanks. When I go to look at the axles what should I be looking for? If they have been swapped from another vehicle will there be obvious weld spots? What axles originally came with that year CJ?
Also, could you tell from the pictures whether that was really a 350 chevy small block?

I think they are wanting quite a bit too much money for it. Just my honest opinion. Frankly s/he doesn't know much about it and probably just guessed at a price range.
The forum over at 4wd.com has some great resources for questions about cj's. If I were you, I would go ask there and see what those guys think. It might save you a headache. Good luck! HBC

the stock rearend pumkin should be round with torx head bolts holding the cover on and the wheel hubs at the tires should be cone shaped if the pumkin is round and the hubs are not cone shapes then the 2 piece axles have been swaped out for one piece axle which would be a plus if its not round then it probley got swaped with d44 rear end from pre 76 which is nothing to be worried about as along as the front gears had been change to match the rear
amc stock cj gears were 3.53 the d44 were 3.73
as for telling if its a 350 you would have to check the block numbers sbc used the same block design just different internal stuff

Engine swap and a seller that "doesn't know the history" of the Jeep - keep looking. If the engine swap was done correctly it might be fine but the overall vibe I get from this Jeep is "half-assed". I had to chuckle at the use of the word "restored".
Unless you really want the short wheelbase of the CJ5 I would go with a CJ7 - the door openings on the CJ5 are real hip-busters!

I have a 48 cj, 51m38, 2 53m38a1's, and i never gave over 2.5k for any of them, and they all looked better than that one. Could be demographics but i think you could find one cheaper on ebay or craigslist, government auctions.
I also check out firestations and forestry service centers. They get first dibs on jeeps from the military.
Happy Hunting!!!
