Don't coil the coax, it can interfere with transmission. Stuff it somewhere rather than coil it.
If the coax is near any power electrical wire, run them perpendicular to each other to negate interference, rather than parallel.

I've been having the same problem ever since I got the unit... Mine works on and off when the jeep is off. Sometimes it'll shoot me the antenna warning and sometimes it won't. But when the engine is on, as soon as I key the mic, it'll give me the antenna warning.

If the SWR changes it could be because of surroundings. Always calibrate in a clear area. You don't want anything within 50 feet or more if possible. I use an open field. If it still changes in an open area you may have a bonding issue.

It's ensuring all major metal parts are interconnected with ground straps and to the ground itself (body, frame, etc). Make sure the antenna base is well grounded.
