I just bought a Yeasu FT-857D and would like to see what types of mounts/antennas/tuners you mobile HF talking JK drivers are sporting!

also if you have a good 2M 70cm dual band antenna setup, I'd like to know that as well.

and don't by shy with the pics!

 

For a 2/70 antenna I run a w w w.eham.net/reviews/detail/434"]Larsen 2/70B on a Diamond K400 hood mount. For HF I run a hamstick for 20m and a 102" whip for 10m mounted on the front ARB bull bar. Works for me.

 

There are a couple here running the Scorpion screwdriver antennas. Look around and you'll find pics. I also think there is a pic of a High Sierra on here as well.

 

I would suggest taking a look at the Yeasu ATAS 120. It looks great on any SUV and is designed to work with the Yeasu FT857. I have an ICOM 706 and plan to put on a Hustler mobile HF with a few different loading coils available. Probably will settle on 20 M so it becomes a lot less expensive. There are pictures of various installs throughout this Forum.
I had a High Sierra a few years ago, on the Motorhome, it was to big and ugly to put on my then Jeep TJ. I finally got tired of always having to tune it and I could never get rid of all the RFI so I sold it. Now with the JK I am back to wanting HF in it. I would probably enjoy the Yeasu ATAS 120 but it requires an extra tuning device for interface to an ICOM and it becomes rather expensive.

Scorpion. I got the Yaesu DTMF mic for my FT-857. I think it is picking RF on SSB. I still have the stock mic and reattached it so hopefully someone can hear me going out and not just breaking squelch.

The other Scorpion owner is goldtr8. He has had better success with his install.

 

I also have a Scorpion and love it. Easy to tune and its less lossy than most options out there.

Do a lot of research before you buy a screwdriver as some of them have metal in the end caps which reduces the coil Q, which is important for a good setup.

My research has led me to the scorpion and I would never go back to hamsticks or tuning a short wire on a mobile again.

I have a Yaesu FT-100 w/ a ATAS-120 and a Larsen dual band 2M/70cm NMO mount both mounted on Arizona Rocky road mounts behind spare tire. Had a ATAS-100 that just wore out after 10 years of use on two Jeeps and several expeditions.
Pretty happy with the setup. Use it nearly everyday. I tune to 20M and take the whips off to park in the garage. Pics in my gallery.

Read this site on mobile operations and his sections on antennas k0bg.com its your call but in mobile operations you talk about loss not dB gain. So antennas make a big difference.

He discusses screwdriver antennas and other setups that can help you do more research.

My research as I said earlier is a Scorpion and AK4Dave and I have conversed in my jeep and his shack between Alaska and Michigan and these were not perfect conditions.
