Default CB

Sorry but I'm really a newbie about the cb. I would be interested to buy one this winter. Do we need to pay for a permit? Any other telecommunication fees?

nope, just the good ole citizen band radio.
i just wired mine up the other day, i'm temporarily using a small magnetic antenna ontop of my soundbar when the top is down, and i can pick up people for about 2 miles away. it's good to have on the trail and it's even better if you have a CB that gets the weather channels in.
a used CB can be found on craigslist or something for a couple bucks, so can an antenna and that. or cooltechlcc has a complete kit for $200.00 which looks like a great kit! i'd go for that but i got a CB for free so i'm just gonna use what i have

If CB is not popular in your area, maybe you might want to look into HAM radio?

are you talking about amateur radio?
If yes, it's too expensive. And in Quebec, you need to take a course to have your permit.

Well it's a class here in the US....pretty easy now that the morse code is gone. But when it comes to rf communications.....you get what you put into it. You can actually get into HAM/ amateur radio reletivly inexpensive. Just depends on what you want to do wit h it.

You may or may not need to take a course in CB use in Canada and get a license. I don't know how the Candian government runs things but a quick Google search seems to confirm there's no restrictions there either other than maximum power output which isn't something a person buying "off the shelf" equipment needs to worry about. That's mostly for people with 10M HAM radio gear who are phreaking it to work on the 11M (CB) frequencies which is, in most cases, illegal.

Amature radio has several advantages and a few disadvatages when compared to CB's.

HAM RADIO PRO's

Excellent range
Larger frequency coverage
Repeater access

HAM RADIO CON's
Steep learning curve
Expensive
Requires licensing.

you don't need any permit for a 40ch CB in QC

i buy a cobra 19DX and a 4 foot firestick + a coax extension (on the unlimited the factory wire of the antenna is too short) at wal-lmart cost me under 200$ and works pretty well i got approximatively a 8-10km range on flat terrain when the SWR is well calibre (you will need a SWRcal to set you antenna, surely that someone got one near you)

in the past i own expensive CB setup with boosters and many more gadgets , and it don't really worth the money except for long distance talking, we don't really need this when wheeling

for the location in the dash, it's not installed yet, i just leave it at home when i don't need it
