Like I said......it doesn't HAVE to be expensive. When I first became a HAM I got some excellent used gear for half that price and was on the air immediately. You guys are thinking big general coverage, or all band multimode rigs or the like. A good plain jane 2m mobile isn't much more than a real good CB. Right now a BRAND NEW Icom IC2200, 65 watt, 2m mobile....an EXCELLENT little radio, is going for $170. at HRO...(Ham Radio Outlet). Plus these radios are 5 TIMES the quality of most CBs.
So there ya go.....

I understand now about a HAM: you live in Alaska! How can you live so far?

Well, Montreal is only 6 hours from NYC by car.
But when you live in Alaska, everything is far
North: Vodka drinkers
East: Yukon
West : water
South: Rocky mountains

IT IS far

Might want to look into this radio fwiw. You can go with the battery pack and carry it like a handheld and act as a spotter without being in your vehicle. plus it has 2 battery packs one for reg batts and one for rechargables with charger plug. and the Wx staions too.

So did you decide on one or still researching?
