Well I'll take a stab at answering.
Turning up your squelch to get rid of the static isn't really an issue. You are just limiting what you can hear. If someone you are talking to isnt transmitting loud or is too far away you may never get the message. As for on the trail or close on a roadtrip turn it down until you can hear them or they "break the squelch".
You may want to start trouble shooting to get the noise down though. Lots of threads on ways of doing it.
As long as your SWR is good and you're fine with localized use it is my complete and total unprofessional and by no means 100% expert opinion you are good to go!
Great thing is if you can't get a hold of a buddy on the trail a cell phone works great no matter your SWR.
