Default Do I need a CB?

Most of my off roading is on ATV's.
I only go wheeling in the jeep a couple times a year. When I do go it's when I'm on vacation( Colorado, Superlift offroad Park this summer, etc.) Do you think a CB is needed?

Thanks,

Jeff

When I first started wheeling I did not see the need for one, I thought others were exagerating and just put one in to raise the "Cool" factor......

Then on like the third time out with a group, it was a trip in the winter through the trails and one of the folks fell a bit behind and could not keep up. The guy in front of him did not realize he was having problems and just kept going. The last 3 in our group ended up getting lost. Had it not been for the cb they may still be out there driving around trying to find their way out

Get one.....for a hundred bucks it is a great peice of mind and a good insurance policy.

You know that is as good as answer as I could get. I want to also have weather channels. Should I get a CB with weather channels, or go with the Uniden 510 and pick up a couple FRS/weather radios. I'm leaning towards the later as I think the FRS handhelds could be handy.

I went with the Cobra 75, it has weather and I use it more than I ever thought I would...I guess it is just what you think you will use....

I installed a Cool Tech mount with 4’ FireStik and mated it to a hand held Midland 75-822 with an 18-821 mobile adapter; works great. I only use CB when required for weekend runs. As a licensed HAM I find 4 watts of AM to take a back seat to 50 watts of FM and mountain top repeaters.

You can never have to much Commo. A CB is important, a HAM is better. But if you're just going off road every now and then a CB's exactly what you need to keep in touch.

I've got the Cobra75. Actually never needed it to talk to anybody yet. But I use the weather channels a lot, and I've heard some entertaining trucker talk at times.

I'd also recommend one of those handheld, handcranked, flashlight and weather radio combo gadgets. Just a little extra peace of mind.

New owner looking to install the same setup. Midland 75-822 with Cool Tech mount and 4' FireStik.

How long is the range? Any regrets? If you have any pics please send.

It works as well as a CB should. The Firestik is a very good antenna; I was able to adjust the SWR to 1.6:1 or less across the band; close to 1:1 in the middle of the band. I know there are a lot of die hard CB fans here but 4 watts of AM has serious limitations. I don't look at CB as a reliable means of emergency communications but it works well enough when you want to talk to others in your group along the trail. However, get little distance between you and your group and you can kiss your communications good-bye.

I have been a licensed HAM since 1983 and with just a hand held and 5 watts of power I am seldom out of repeater range regardless of where I go. Add a high gain antenna and a 50 watt mobile rig and simplex range increases drastically and even more repeaters come within range.

If you don’t want to make a permanent CB installation (with the expectation of the antenna) I think the Midland hand held tapped into 12V’s of Jeep battery power mated to the FireStik is about as good a 4 watts of CB can get.
