I haven't put my radio in yet, but I have 2-meter VHF for mobile use. It's the most useful for jeep/jeep communication on the road, as well as calling for assistance if needed.

I bought the antenna mount for the spare tire bracket and still need to purchase a new mobile antenna.

Yes, I use a 2 meter for communications during CERT and for trails when the CB won't do.

I have a Yeasu FT8900R in my Jeep, I mounted it above the rear-view mirror.
I did a mod to back the plastic with an aluminum plate so the screws don't pull through, it's very solid.

I really need to get a new digital camera... :-(

I use 70cm and 2m right now but I'm going to setup a quad band antenna
so I can use 6m and 10m. In fact I'm going to run 2 antennas once the congo cage gets here I have to get a diplexer...

I used a heavy duty lip mount on the hing side of the tail gate for the 70cm/2m antenna (18 inches) works great on the repeaters in the Mpls/STP area.

I'll use a heavy duty tube mount on the congo cage for the 54 inch antenna. It's a fold over, I just hope I remember to fold it.

Join a local club it will help beyond your wildest dreams.

I have a Yaesu FTM-10R/E rig for the Jeep. I haven't installed it yet (radio looks at him glaringly from across the room) because I'm still trying to figure out where to mount the front panel.

I use an Icom IC-7000 as a base HF/VHF/UHF rig. If I wasn't afraid of theft, the IC-7000 would make a very nice mobile rig for the Jeep.

I have my trusty Yaesu FT-100 HF VHF/UHF installed. Antennas are mounted on spare tire mount.
See my pictures.
Good luck on the test.

I am wanting to put in an 857nd. It has a detachable face as well and I think it's about the same size as yours, storyg, so I think it would be pretty cool to put mine where you put yours. I still haven't bought a radio or antenna for my JK though, and I didn't know Teraflex made antenna mounts (proving again that I am a JK newbie ). Good stuff.

Any dual-band 2m/70cm radio will work well as a mobile rig for local commuications. I'm partial to Icom myself and use an Icom 207h in my truck. In my Jeep, however, I use an Icom 706mkIIg. It has comparable capabilities as the IC7000 mentioned above, but is an older model and not quite as likely to get stolen. It gives me the ability to do VHF/UHF and all the HF ham bands (one antenna output for VHF/UHF and one for HF). The HF output feeds into an LDG automatic antenna tuner and then passes on to the 102" whip. The tuner let's me use the whip on most HF bands. The VHF/UHF antenna is a generic dual-bander I found online. It's nice and small and stays out of way for the most part (the 102" whip is removed when top clearance is gonna be tight). Here are some pics of my install.
