Handheld CB recommended???
Not hand held, but I highly recommend the Cobra 75 WX-ST.
Nothing to steal or mess with when you're not wheeling and a good CB when you need it.
I can hear folks great on mine and they say they can hear me great too.
If I remember correctly, you're gonna need the CB, a Bullfrog or Cooltech VersaMount mic mount (or stick it in your cup holder when not using it) 18' coax cable, an antenna mount, and an antenna.
There's a great write up on here on how to install it.
It's been a long time since I put mine in, but you'll probably have about 175.00 in the whole set up and you'll have a good CB for off road use.
As for the antenna, just get a TeraFlex tailgate mount and one of these and you're in business. I
This is made by Firestik, but I'm sure any brand would work.

I ONLY install my CB and antenna when I'm going offroading.
I know it's not what you posted about, but I do hope you'll consider going this route. I've never heard of anybody that's unhappy with it.

You can easily mount the antenna on your tailgate or license plate bracket, and use a quick-detach to take it off when you're concerned about overhead clearance.
If you were to go with a handheld as your main CB, I think that you would quickly become frustrated with the overall performance. CB operates in the 11 meter band, and that means that teeny little rubber duck antennas just don't work all that well.
Yep I'm going with the Cobra 75 set up. Thanks for all the info. Now I just have to wait until Christmas to get it since the wife says its for Christmas. Oh well I've spent enough this year on this rig. A few more weeks of waitin aint gonna hurt!!
Thanks guys!!

Excellent Choice with the Cobra 75, I drilled the aftermarket (driverside) mirror mount and ran a 6' coax. If your worried about the length get a 24" antenna and it is flush with the top of the jeep off the mirror bracket.
This pic is attached to wheel all day or for the highway
This is the setup if you're helping someone navigate a long run as a spotter or around basecamp.
New egg had 'em for $70ish.
The range is same as others with same antenna setup.

Use it hand held with it's own rubber ducky antenna or mount the magnet mount 12" antenna on the hood in the center of the windshield.

That's very similar to my setup, Mark.
I have a pair of the Cooltech mounts (one for CB, one for 2m/70cm) that bolt to the tire carrier. I particularily like them because they're made out of a chunk of 1/4" stainless bar stock - they'll probably outlast both the tailgat and the antennas
I actually run a 4 foot whip on there - but I chose a very flexible Wilson whip, and also added a quick-detach for parking garages and car washes.
