Default Issue with CB

okay... my cobra is acting up... thought the CB just went bad due to getting soaked so i replaced it... same thing with the new one.

kinda hard to explain, but basically, it sometimes works and sometimes does not.

when it works, if i move the squelch dial all the way down (fully open) the static is very loud on full volume

when it does not work, and i do the same as above, it is exteremely quiet even at full volume... as in you have to stop driving, turn the radio off, etc to even hear the volume.

i have check cable, connections, antenna, and everything looks to be in working order.

The power set up... red wire from CB to battery and black wire from CB to a ground point on my windshield frame.

coax is run to the back of the vehicle with a fiberglass tuneable antenna and teraflex mount.

This has been the setup from day 1 and for somereason is just started acting up... sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

anyone have any suggestions? similar issues?

Purely guessing here, but did you replace the actual interface box, or just the actual radio part? I'm wonder if perhaps something is wrong with the box like it thinks an external speaker is plugged and therefore attenuating the speaker in the radio.

Just throwing out some ideas...

Maybe try a different ground and different antenna?

I had the same problem, when I stuck and SWR meter on it I found out that my fiberglass antenna had an internal short. If the fiberglass fractures it wont be readily apparent. Try a different antenna or check your SWR while your antenna is wiggling

kinda like when i drove into the garage, i bent all the way backwards... ripped it out of the threads and left it laying on the ground?

so if the fiberglass is broke then it can cause it to work sometimes and not others?

if so... then i think i found the problem! (and by "I" i mean "you"... thanks!)

I have the same problem when my unit gets really hot. This is the first AZ summer with my unit mounted to the dash it was getting really hot. I bought a cheapy sunshade and cut it to fit the Jeep windshield and now the problem went away. The other issue I am having now is with my NAV. It only works half the time now, probably need to sheild it from the metal. Thoughts?

Another thing to always remember is....the antenna ground is the other "half" of the antenna system. First.....I would make sure to check to see if your ground is loose....ie, making contact (when it seems to be working good), and wiggling loose ( when it deosn't seem to be working at all).
