so i installed my corba 19 dxiv in the jeep with a cigarette lighter power adapter for now, but when i went to use the radio the other day it sounded like a skipping cd... and i dont know why so if anyone has an idea on how i can fix it that would be highly appreciated

 

Sounds like a short in the coax or a poorly attached/grounded antenna.

Start with the antenna mount, then antenna, then coax and work toward the radio.

Edit: you may also just have your squelch set too high, to state something that may not be obvious to someone new to radio. And then it's just periodically breaking the squelch.

Also, when posting, please use titles that represent your concern. Makes them much nor searchable and useful to others.

i did recently install a ground wire between the nylon washer and where the adapter screws to the spring. its touching the nylon washer right above the mount then it is run inside where it is grounded to the gate. i didn't do the skipping thing before i grounded it. i used the eye bolt style crimp connectors to connect to the 12 ga wire that i used for the ground wire. my friend is currently borrowing my swr meter so it will be a little while before i can recheck that. i am using a standard coax cable 18 ft in length and a 3 ft diesel fixed length antenna, which will soon get swapped for a 4 ft tunable antenna. it is also mounted in the worst place possible, but for a broke college kid it was the easiest way to mount it.

 

i also put some dielectric grease on the threads of the antenna where it goes into the spring. dunno if that could be causing problems.

 

The dielectric grease is fine.

I'm not sure about that ground wire on the nylon nut you referenced. It sounds like you may be grounding the vertical monopole component instead of the mount. The mount is what must be bonded (grounded) to the frame.

will do here in a little bit, and yes that is what i did. i did that because my mount is powdercoated and i dont have an easy way to sand that down to bare metal. is it ground-able without sanding off the coating?

 

Generally using star washers on the screws is enough to make the needed ground from the mount/body. Also, thicker uncoated solid copper or copper braid is the best way to bond the mount/gate/frame.

 

star washers being the little spikey ones? ya i know thats a real technical term. and youre saying i need thicker wire than 12 ga?

 

Yes, the spikey ones.

Don't try and solve too many things at once. First get rid of the wire that's messing with the nylon isolator.
