Stock JK TechBulletin board forum regarding issues with OE (original equipment) components of the Jeep JK Wrangler (Rubicon, Sahara, Unlimited and X) such as factory suspension parts, engine, transmission, body parts, interior fixtures and the on-board computer.
So I have read through many threads pertaining to this issue and have gone through a bunch of different tests and steps to attempt to get my error to clear to no avail. I am at a loss at this point so looking for anyone who has maybe dealt with this issue. Breakdown of what has transpired is below . . .
>Mid November the ABS & Traction Control lights come on after a week of driving muddy/rocky fire roads.
>Take jeep to the car wash and thoroughly spray all surface under/in/around wheel etc. Light shuts off while pulling out of car wash bay only to come back on 30 seconds later. It then proceeds to shut back off for half a day and then come back on for good up to present date.
>Connect to code reader and see that it is C1020 - Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor. Pulled wheel speed sensor and cleaned the sensor and sensor mount/cavity and put back together. Light still on.
>Tried using the ABS module of the reader to erase the code with no luck.
>Pulled sensor back out and put it on the ohm reader and could not get an ohm reading. Purchased new sensor (read 4+- ohms) and installed that. Light still on/attempted to erase code with same result. ABS/Traction lights still on.
>Drove jeep around 15miles at speeds above 50. Still not cleared.
>Pulled everything back apart and used meter to make sure I was getting proper voltage through the harness. Just shy of 11v . .. all good. Checked the speed ring to make sure it was not full of grease as I did notice it seems its about time for new axle seals although bearings might be about ready for replacement but there does not appear to be any play in them quite yet. Pics of this step below (after cleaning grease out from the teeth on the speed sensor wheel.) I even disconnected the plug under the hood where a guy had mentioned having a few loose pins where it goes into the firewall.
It is possible but like I said, I am getting solid voltage through the pins on that harness and I even measured while pulling and pushing the wire to make sure it wasn't a loose pin. Many others on here have seemed to point to the hub bearings possibly being bad/about bad and that causing the issue. I might have a slight bit of slop in them but its so very minor that it would amaze me that it would trip that sensor. I would think it would be clearing/tripping on and off more instead of remaining constant.
This is an odd issue. I would concur that hub bearings can occasionally cause an issue as they'd allow a small bit of play and put that tone ring out of a normal pattern which the sensor would pick up. What is odd is that you cannot clear the code at all. I've never run in to a situation that I couldn't clear an ABS code. Just curious, have you tried swapping the rear sensors left to right on a whim to see if anything changes? If it was the bearings, you'd be able to clear the code and the code would eventually pop back up after a bit of driving....most likely after taking a few corners.
@ronjenx - can you think of a reason that someone could not clear an ABS code at all? I could see clearing it and it pops right back up.....i can't see not being able to clear it at all.

This was my first attempt at clearing a code on my own but I had the same thought. I assumed that when you erased the code it would go away until you began driving and the system detected the error again. It made me wonder if the reader I rented from Autozone maybe wasn't up to date or had some issue that wasn't allowing it to actually clear the error. After I saw a bunch of threads where guys said their error went away on its own after fixing the issue I just figured I hadn't solved the bug. I attempted to clear it with the reader more times than i can recall. It would beep and say error erased and the Jeep dash would *DING* and the read BRAKE indicator light would flash but the 2 yellow ABS & Traction lights would remain on. Then the reader would go into its detection phase and beep again that it detected the same wheel speed sensor error.
I have not tried swapping the rear senors yet but it was on the list of potential "give it a shot" steps to try next.
Thanks for any insight you guys have, relieved to hear that this is a weird one to you all as well.
If you don't have your own scanner, you should really look into the Jscan app for your phone. a $13 blutooth dongle off the web and a $20 license fee for the app gets you an extremely dynamic code reader combined with a programmer for other little random things you may tweak in the computer system. But yes, you should be able to clear the code in the ABS module and if the problem isn't resolved it will pop back up. I also find that when i throw an ABS code, I usually throw the same corresponding code in the transmission module (I have an auto). I am not familiar with the scanners the auto stores rent.

Thanks I will look into that. The Autozone rental was an Innova.
UPDATE: I realized I never came back to update that after throwing in the towel and taking it to a mechanic he was able to find a short in the wiring like mentioned above. Issue resolved. $50 bill.
Replaced sensor and lights came back within a week
I just recently had this happen and I am livid. I had the codes read, got this one and u140b. Replaced the sensor using part from autozone. Fixed it for like a week of little driving. At least the vehicle stopped driving dumb with the abs gripping or feeling like I was loosing power. When it came back, I researched ordering a harness to see if it was that since reading the codes said “implausible” this time. I ended up trying my nearest dealer as I have an CPO vehicle and a Service contract that I thought would cover it according to their print. I was wrong. They also found it to be the sensor and replaced it again roughly a week later. (I have a feeling the lights may come back) They pretty much put me in the position that I was at fault for even touching my jeep at all if I notice any problems with it. They would not honor the warranty I purchased or the CPO. Should have only been a $100 deductible. Instead, 255...plus autozone won’t take back their part because it was installed. Nor should I ask for my money back from my mechanic that installed the autozone part. So I am out like 360 for these stupid lights.
