Most all cb shops stopped selling them because there's to much to go wrong and there not that easy to fix because everything runs through the mic. For example, if the mic fails on the other units, you can just replace the mic. If it fails on the cobra 75, you have to replace the whole unit. But that's just my opinion. The license plate bracket looks great, mounts directly to the body and gets a good ground.
This is very true, but the 75WXST is ideal for Jeeps where, unlike the cab of a big rig, the space is limited.

By no means is the 75WXST the only way to go though. Check Eddie's write up and many others for examples of people who put full units mounted either on the dash, side of the console or above the rearview mirror.

I like the 75WXST because I can unplug it and the entire unit is gone. This is great because I don't always need the unit installed. In fact, I never use it - its for trail use only.

wow, you know guys I thought I had my mind made up but Red Rubi made a good point and not to start a debate but IMHO that's why I never bought a TV with a VCR as one unit...me too I'm old school and thought for a moment that with todays technology the Cobra75 would be ..."the S h i t" as my teenage son would say when he sees a new game or a new gadget as the I-PHONE...so now back to
square one......and that is not a bad thing since I too was a little worried about the "all in one " CB...back in the day Railroad Salvage was the Mecca for CB's where you could actually see and try the models they sold....so now I just have to rely on those of you who have them... ..the search continues........
I saw a Midland75-822 for 74.99 @ a place that has a name of the biggest river in South America...my birthplace....... ..any comments will be appreciated....wifey is loving this as she reads my threads and can see that she has plans for my $$$....

It's really not a big deal HEK. We're talking about sub $100 CBs here. The 75WXST works great. If it does break, oh well. Mine has worked solid the entire time I've had it.

Full size units work fine too...and you can get them much cheaper. You can't go wrong with any of them. At this price point, the differences in these CBs are very minor. If you're worried about price, just go get a used one at a garage sale or pawn shop. You can usually find one that will work just fine for less than $20.

You only use them on the trail anyway. Depending oon how often you get out there it may be better to go cheap and work your way up the more you feel the need. You are usually only talking to others a couple of hundred yards away anyway. Not like in the old day where we used to ride around all day talking to truckers, etc

Default Cooltech....

So I got my Midland yesterday and today I just got my Cool Tech antenna / bracket..one thing that is now required is to solder the "nipple" connector to the actual screw on piece that connects to your CB...I saw pictures on a previous thread and there was a connector already mounted on the coax cable..... , why did they send me a cable that needs to be connected and then I have to solder the tip....I'll have to wait now until Monday to borrow one from work...I wish they would have mentioned it and not made a change w/out notification to those who may not have access to a soldering gun or are able to solder...my 2 cents...

Edit my fault....I just read the entire Cooltech instructions and saw that they do tell you that you need to so,der the tip....

Over the last 8 years, i have had 3 Cobra 75's in my jeep. Everyone of them eventually failed - one was sent in twice to be fixed. The most common problem was that the micro switches used to move the channels up and down failed. the only way i could tune to the correct channel was to have my buddy give me a count down while i pushed the scan button. when it locked onto the right channel, i pressed the lock key.

Sound quality was generally very good but given the consistent failures i have had with the 75 in a jeep, i will never own one again.

Default My setup

I have a Uniden Bearcat PC68ELITE mounted on homemade mount above the rear view mirror. A Terra-Flex spare tire antenna mount with a Firestick quick release and a 5' Firestick. The unit system works very well together and looks good to boot.
I got a $40.00 rebate from Uniden on the CB, IT'S ALL GOOD!
I mounted a second quick release which I intend to use to mount a flag. Both antenna and flag will mount inside on the hard top when stored.

So my set up is a Firestick/ Cootech "license plate" bracket which IMHO is not as easy install as most have mentioned....(try removing the bottom screws of the plate holder with just conventional tools)....right 1/2 hour...NOT...sorry but I have to say it like it is...and well why go on..my CB is a Midland 75 handheld unit which I tried to use but not one person or channel was being used...wow...now I know why you guys just use it for the trails...no truckers "nut in honey"...oh well just got to go and get some "black" sealer so that I can patch up the hole I made just ever so big....

after all that work I hope you're not correct... , I'm waiting until tomorrow that I can borrow a soldering gun and solder the tip as required, and I'll get some re-chargeble batteries so that I can try my CB and see if the range is better or worse using the hand held antenna / set up..oh well, is not like the old days when you couldn't get a word out because everybody was using the channels....and I mean every channel, not just 19....
