Why do a CB?
I looked for a thread on this and could not find it even thou I know its out there.
But why do you need a CB? I understand the uses and how handy it can be in getting help and talking to other while on the trail but is it such a big deal to require one? I have seen off road clubs that will not let you join unless you had one.
Just wondering if it is so important do I need one? I really don't see me needing one right now.

They are very handy and can be fun on the highway. Yes, most clubs do require them. You can put a cheap setup together for 100 bucks.
If you don't want to get one, just don't be surprised if they won't let you join the fun ;-)

clubs require them (as they should) because not being able to communicate with others in your group can be dangerous and irresponsible. CB offers simple group communication that is not dependent on any external assistance (cell towers) or certification (ham, gmrs). They are inexpensive and a proven technology that is widely used and easy to get.
Yes, there are still hand-helds out there, but not having it secured to your rig could prove to be a problem when off road. I have a cheapo Cobra attached to the center console and I put an adaptor on the power cables to run it in my accessory adaptor. I can pull the whole thing out in like 3 minutes and not worry about it if I wanted to, and just use it on teh trail. I keep it in all the time just in case I need it though.
You might want to check out the Midland 75-822. It is a walkie talkie that you can attach to an external antenna (or magnet mounted antenna) to get good reception. It has the advantage over the Cobra 75 of being able to easily go from one vehical to another. The cobra needs a mounted box. That said do you really need it in more than one Jeep? Well I'm starting to rant, so I'm going to roll.
