anything is worth a shot. back when i did car audio type work, i never ever used a pre existing ground. i would give that a shot, and then maybe follow the directions you quoted above.

Ok, Here are the wiring instructions for the lights. The red wire from the switch is the one I tapped into the headlight high beams...seems to me it just goes into the switch.
