What scanner to buy that reads more than basic codes

The repair was the cruise control switches. These switches are not just basic switches. It is an interface board with like ten IC chips that decode inputs ect and send info on the can bus. This switch setup is the first thing to try in many problems.
Thanks, eventually I want to get something that will communicate with more/all devices on the buses. Any further info or comparison is appreciated.
