Default Learn a lesson from this! (Mostly to the noobs.)

This is a lesson to all the noobs... Not trying to be a jerk here, I promise!

My friends buddy got a 2012 Rubicon. Dumped loads of money into it. New gears, 37's, bead locks, front and rear bumper w/tire carrier, Warn power plant, ect.. (You get the idea.)

Today was only his second trail run. He claimed that his first trail was in Moab. So, we come to a narrow part of the trail. We have the steep hill side and tree limbs to our driver and a 100ft ledge on the passenger. Evan didn't want to get his new pain scratched, so he hugged passenger.

He's directly behind me and I lost sight of him. I stop for a second and I hear him on the CB, "Yo...!! I need some help quick!". My friend in front of me doesn't have a CB, so I honk like a mad man and he stops. I reverse and see him, teetering... NOT GOOD!!! At this spot, I'm only able to go UP so slow, backing down..? Geezus!!! It felt like forever! My adrenalin was on 100%! I get close enough to at least hook up tow straps. I put my lockers on and yank! NOTHING! I try again... NOTHING! I figure, ok... At least he's anchored. I told him to stay in the jeep for a few reasons. 1. Weight. I feared if he tried to get out, the balance would be thrown off and it would have gone as he got out. 2. If he did get out ok, getting back in to drive it out could have been difficult and again, balance.

I then run to his winch (no time for gloves) and start to bring out slack. Finally, Don has run down the hill and lends a hand. I run back to my jeep, grab my snatch block and tree strap (because Evan doesn't have the appropriate recovery equipment). Don and I get Evan hooked up and managed to guide him out. Knowing that he was hugging passenger so he doesn't scratch his paint, I told him... "Would you rather have scratches in your paint and have to spend a 1/2 day buffing them out, or would you rather be in a medical emergency and have NO JEEP AT ALL?". He also got a lesson in spending $60K on a jeep and $0 on self recovery accessories.

Like I said... Not trying to be a jerk, but there IS a lesson to be learned here.

Well that'll learn him. Paint is less important than staying upright.

Thanks. Instinct took over... First time in that situation. Just glad it worked out. I don't know what would have happened next if he rolled it. Almost no way to get the jeep out of there. Unless you have a helicopter.

Wow that's got to be a horrible feeling. I'm definitely a noob to recovery... How is this set up again? His winch hooked up to another JK or to a tree? Just curious on how this was managed.

I ran his cable to a tree strap secured by a dring and snatch block. Ran the hoop back to his rig using the dring on his bumper.
