I used to think I'd want a manual on and off road, but lately I've been rethinking my choice. I think I want a DD that's a 6spd and a dedicated trail rig that's auto.

Ok, that's not gonna happen so I'll probably end up with an auto, but still not 100% committed. If I don't find a great deal on an auto, then I'll stick to a manual and just wait for the HEMI swap to get the auto.
yeah right, if this, if that , yeah right you can change your name , but you can't change yourself

When I bought the Jeep I only considered the manual, I have had auto trucks and manuals and always preferred the control of the manual.e

The only time I prefer an auto is in stop and go traffic, but that is rare for me.

I am sure that th e answer is personnal preferance and that is what is so good about where we live in the US.

So I have a manual, I love it and thats my story and I'm sticking too it.

With the exception of reduced engine breaking on very steep hills, I prefer the auto in my JK to the 5 speed in my old TJ ...offroad.

As my daily driver, I would prefer a manual since the power of the engine is marginal for such a heavy vehicle, and the transmission has about 2 gears worth of rpm between gears, and the drive by wire throttle won't listen when I tell it to go...

For nine years I drove my TJ with a five speed maulal - and loved it! That being said, my JK has an automatic tranny and I like it even better, especially off road. Who knew?

I cannot imagine not using an automatic. I used to think the whole thing was personal preference, but now I'm not so sure it's just that.

I've had both and was equally happy with the performance of both because of what they offer. Auto is easier and gives you one less thing to worry about on the really tough obstacles. Manual is more challenging, and IMO more fun. Right now I have a manual, and wouldn't trade it for the world. Ask again in 5 years and you will probably get a different response.

So if it's about testing your driving ability, just keep your Jeep stock on 32s with open diffs and really test yourself on difficult trails!?

I personally think that it depends on the person and there skills. For me Manual, I have done both and yes it is easier with an auto but i am the type that gets board with just putting it in gear and go.
