I would have to go with personal preferance. But with some people I see wheelin need to have an auto due to with them running a manual they have too many things going on.

I had a auto 83' bronco which was good but after that I drove a manual car and will probably never go back. Here are other benefits of the manual trans that have not been covered.

1.) Mantastic
2.) Looks cooler in the cabin
3.) Chicks dig manaul
4.) Less people asking to drive your Jeep because they can't drive stick

I love the manual, that is what I grew up on. I had two autos, they were nice but its definitely a lot more fun.

I have a manual and I feel like I have a lot more control of my vehicle on the trail. The gas mileage on the street is def a bonus also!! I normally getting 19-20, but never under 18, that's a lot better than some of things i've heard about the autos!

I gotta say a stick for the DD, from what I've heard from a lot is a bunch of bitching about power and gears. I've got 35's and have no problems, of course I accept that I'm driving a Jeep not a Ferrari. On the trails however I can see where auto would be convenient (roasted clutch::}. The gear ratio on mine is awesome, I don't think I could stall it if I wanted to, in 4Low.

Some of us bitching and whining about gears aren't concerned about going faster, we are concerned about going slower. I personally don't like my vehicle idling at 10 mph when I let out the clutch. Also with 3.21 gears and 32" tires, you have to ride the clutch pretty bad sometimes just to get it moving, especially if you are up against something. In 4lo there have been steep hills that I have had the gas pedal all the way to the floor, clutch all the way out, and the jeep still almost stalled. I prefer easing over things instead of hitting them that fast. I assume from your post that you either don't wheel very hard, (like me,) or that you don't have 3.21 gears.
