ive been pulled out a number of times on my old gmc 2500. and i have pulled other people out with a chain. i also have had a 50000 lbs syn strap i would much rather use the strap. allthou my chain was what my grandfather uses to pull skidders out when they get stuck so i had no fears of it breaking.

Default Chains

Most chains that are hd will have a tag with the rating. Just get one that covers your weight.

Thanks for all the responses. I was at harbor freight and I picked up a sales ad. They will be having a sale on 5/16" x 20ft chain-grade 70 for $19.99 I think I will pick up one of these.

Yes. That is very much applicable to choosing the right rating for a winch and cable. Just remember two things:

#1. Your winch won't pull it's maximum rated load unless almost all of the cable has been paid out.

#2. You can use a snatch block to (almost) double the pulling power of your winch.

For instance: My Warn 9.5ti's pull is limited to 6940 pounds when on the outermost wrap of the drum (simple leverage....or lack thereof), but I can double that to almost 14,000 pounds by using my snatch block.

I saw those, they are only rated for 4700 pounds, is that enough for a stuck vehicle?

#2. Not all chain is created equal. Here's a chart to allow you compare strengths and sizes.

http://www.1st-chainsupply.com/WLLchart.htm

If you're a "little bit stuck" you'll need to pull the weight of your Jeep.

If you're "nice and stuck" you'll need to pull twice the weight of your Jeep.

If you're "TRULY stuck" you'll need to pull three tiems the weight of your Jeep.
thx for the chain link, came in very handy!!!!!!!
