What is the axe for?
A run I did a couple of weeks ago I got a tree wedged under my axle and between my rear bumper and rear corner. There was very little carnage, actually the only thing was that ridiculous plastic stock POS licence plate holder, which thankfully was a total loss. There was no way to just yank it out, pulling it out with a winch was going to be ugly.
One guy grabbed his chain saw and was trying to start it. 5 other guys gathered around and started saying how their chain saws don't start. I pulled out my ax and had the 4" sapling un-sprung so that we could get it out from the bumper and I could drive out. The guy with the saw finally got it going, everybody cheered and he cut the little stump that I left down so that the next 10 jeeps wouldn't catch a brake line or something.
If you are clearing trails, chain saw. If you are trying to get out / over / around something a sharp ax is probably a faster, more reliable approach. Same thing for zombies, they aren't going to wait for you to clean the spark plug and the 10 other things we generally have to do to get our saws started. With an ax it's just off with their heads and you're moving again.

Yeah....I ran into a pack of zombies ( hippies, crackheads, bumbs ) once in Eureka CA., they came out of the woods from everywhere like mesquitoes. Just had to put my hand on the axe and they took off running. ( the .45 probably didn't hurt either )
