Did a nice weekend trip into Rady Creek just west of Trout Lake, BC. Lots of exploration with steep & narrow roads. Nice way to end up the summer camping season. Not often in BC that you can drive up to 7200' asl.

Yeah, I wish they'd come out with a straight answer to that. Here's what a USA Today article from last week had to say on this subject: "Another Google advantage comes in mapping and location-based technologies. The Nexus 7 has GPS. The 7-inch Fire HD has location-based technologies built around Wi-Fi hot spots. (GPS is coming to the 8.9-inch 4G models, Amazon says.) Adding GPS improves accuracy."

Search the web and you'll find plenty of places that say the Kindle Fire HD does not currently have GPS, and other places that say it does. I think everyone knows, but wi-fi location is absolutely not GPS, and is completely useless for wilderness travel. BTW: I also searched on "Kindle Fire HD GPS Apps" and came up with zilch. If they are out there (I know someone is going to prove me wrong), they certainly aren't popping up at the top of a search on Google or YouTube. Perform these same searches substituting Nexus 7 for Kindle Fire HD, and you get all kinds of hits (albeit, the product has been out there longer).

Tablet GPS is great as long as you have a big memory card. I have to get vectors e dock now. My GPS finally works on my Archos tablet. Had to root, and install a custom rom. But now I have loads of goodies on an 8" display. Clinometer, full travel guage package and GPS mapping, tracking and routing.

Its going to be fun in the country now.

There is a calibration feature, but it's based on the leveling of the tablet, and not necessarily the vehicle. On top of that, while it's good while traveling slow, the data is actually derived from the accelerometers, therefore it shows driving at an angle when traveling perfectly level, but accelerating or decelerating.

I know what you mean, Mark. We'll probably just have to wait until the Fire HD becomes more prevalent in the wild to really find out what's going on. If its capable of true GPS, then someone will come out with an app for it. Neither this, nor the Nexus are in my budget for anytime in the near future, so I have time to wait.

Getting their still looking to add roof rack. Thinking a Yakima mega warrior extension basket for easy use with all other Yakima addons. But also debating a saving for a gobi ranger instead. Thoughts? Possibly a snorkel but I really don't want to cut anything. Let me know what ya think.

I'd say Yakima or Snorkel.

Personally Snorkel would fit my future sooner than roof rack.

But it appears you use your top area for poles, guessing other stuff as well. So the Roof Basket may benefit you more in the first place.
