Is that USB port sufficient for a tablet? Not that I have one, just curious what anyone's experience may have been.

My concern wasn't actually the 12 VDC. Heck, I've had my Jeep soaked in water and the 12 volt circuits do fine. My concern was the possiblity of literally sitting in water (say the water came in over the door sills during a ford) with 125 VAC power turned on. Sort of like standing in the tub and reaching over and touching the outlet in your bathroom for your shaver, if you know what I mean (okay, I'm actually a razor guy, truth be known). So I don't see the relay as an answer. Doing some research on "marine inverters", I found the following that I think would be a really nice solution for most folks Jeep AC power needs. At 600 watts, that's enough power for pretty much everything short of extreme ironing ...

Pure sine wave for the most fussy gear, and it has a GFCI outlet to automatically and quickly turn off power in the event of a short (such as if water works its way to where it shouldn't be) ...

It is $190 on Amazon. I think I'm going to add this to my never ending future upgrade list.

I'm not certain on the power output, but I do know that it has enough power to charge my iPod.

I've noticed that the usb port on the rhw is significantly better than the in the console......not sure about a tablet but charge time on an I- phone is shorter plugged to the dash usb if that is of any use...

EDIT: I'M AN IDIOT. MY CHARGER FOR MY N7 IS PLUGGED INTO A CIGARETTE CHARGER IN THE ARM REST CONSOLE. NOT THE USB CONNECTION AS PREVIOUSLY STATED.

Initial information that isn't accurate. "With my 2012 Nexus 7 the USB port is sufficient to maintain and slightly charge while in use. I'm using the same app as you Mark (Backcountry Navigator Pro) and has set my tablet to never turn off automatically. It charges so slow that I wouldn't ever try to use the tablet for navigation and charge it from a very low battery level but I've managed day trips with heavy use and been able to maintain a full battery over 8+ hours.

**I only have one USB which is under the center arm rest.**"

Jeep is coming along, about 6 months ago I put a 2.5 MetalCloak lift and M.O.R.E skid plate. Over the last 10 months, I have been looking for parts in Criaglist & forums.

3 months ago, I added a Spod, on board air, reclined the rear seat

Finally found the AEV bumpers (front bumper, which plate & skid =$800) (rear bumper & tire carrier = $1100) & came across some AEV wheels (7 = $950). Then I added the winch, fuel caddy & backup camera & KC Daylighters.

Plan to add rear seat heaters, a rear deck, & tail gate table soon.
Later a high lift jack & pull pal.

Yes, the standard 12v ports are really just trickle charge and will maintain the charge with normal usage but barely up the charge in the battery, whereas a decent dedicated inverter will charge in a similar fashion to you wall socket. I have my iPad mounted in cab and charge lead goes to the 12v socket. If the iPad is switched on it will maintain battery at the per cent age it's at when I start. If I switch the iPad off it will increase the per cent age by a couple of per cent per hour.

Since you're tryin' to save $$ you should make your own tailgate table.

Here's mine...

Do you mean the USB port (which is 5V)? I've found the 12V ports (cigarette lighters) work fine for tablets if you get the right USB power adapter (see my power configuration comments above).
