Default Jeep Fuse box fire beware!!!!

Warning your Jeep fuse boxes located on the right hand side on the engine compartment can catch on fire..There has been over 700 Jeeps that have went up in flame for this reason....

On Dec. 31 at 4:30 PM My Wife ,Two Kids (2 & 5 years old) and I were driving down the road to get a B-day present for my Brother in-law. As we were driving I was over take by a smell of burning plastic and saw smoke coming from my hood!!!!! I pull into driveway of a video store parking lot and told the Wife to get the Kids out of the Jeep. I then proceeded to open the hood of my Jeep to my horror I saw flames coming from the Totally Integrated Power Module fuse box panel on the right side near the battery and fuel line. I then gabbed some bottles of water we had in the Jeep and tried to put out the fire but it just keep burning!!!!! Thank God my Wife went into the video store and gabbed a fire extinguisher and I put the fire out. I did a lot of research on the web and found out this is not and isolated incident.
There was a story of John Tuerk of AAS Custom Jeeps who stated that his Jeep caught fire at a Jeep Jamboree and the (TIMP) fuse box on the Jeep JK is defective and that is what caused the fire.. I talked with John and told him what happened and he stated Jeep is trying to cover up the fact that the TIMP fuse box is defective. On the bottom of the TIMP fuse box there the are a bunch of open hole which water can collect and cause the Jeep to catch fire!!!! you look at the pictures and Judge for yourself. Please be sure you carry a fire extinguisher in your Jeep !!!!!

Carrying an extinguisher in any vehicle is a good idea.

The holes in the bottom of mine look like they are there to let water drain out.
What would be good to know is what caused the TIPM to catch on fire.
Was it water? A defective component on one of the boards? Or a short somewhere inside or outside the TIPM?

Wow! For the last couple of months (jeep is trail rig only-not DD) I have been smelling a plastic burning smell after taking long drives or wheeling all day. I've searched higher and lower and have not been able to narrow it down. I wonder if some of my fuses or box is melted. Thank you for posting this, I'm headed to the garage right now to take a look!

Default Jk fire

GreenJK07 check under the Fuse box and look at the wires. Take the cover off and then tilt the box forward and check the wire under the box !!!!

I'm glad you all got out OK. How much damage to the Jeep?

I searched for "Feds prob Jeep engine fires NBC Connecticut", and found the report.
The only way I can see water getting into the fuse box through the drain holes is if the Jeep is in deep enough to submerge the TIPM.
If yours was never in water that deep, perhaps something else went wrong.
Unfortunately, after the fire, it's really hard to tell the exact cause.

I've been through some deep puddles that made quite a splash, and a few shallow streams. My TIPM is dry inside.

It's possible the drain holes are a factor in fires caused by TIPM water intrusion. I don't think that has been determined yet.
I'd like to see them investigate and find an actual cause so it can be prevented in other Jeeps.

Need to check the fires and see how many had aftermarket wiring hooked up through fuse box and how the aux items were hooked up.

For people running snorkels, would it be wise to silicone the holes?
