I find my stock 3.21 gears to be perfect for the 6 speed. I only have the 29 inch tires, but I can't imagine it being geared numerically higher. The thing want to take off in 1st as it is!

I also find it to be quite peppy. Above 2300, and the engine becomes a monster with lots of power.
She has the automatic. with the 245/75/16 which are about 30.5". I would think the 3.21 would be okey with 29" tires but I still believe it would have better power with 3.73's, however I would think you would be way below the power curve with the 3.21's and 35's or even 33's.

It would be the other way around.

I see your point with 4.10 and it's what I have and it's acceptable. If you go with heavier bumpers and a Winch you may wish you went 4.88. My heavy bumpers and winch have sucked some life out of her (on the street) when wheeling in low my JK is still an animal. But hey, gear swaps are expensive.

I hear ya on that. They are expensive. I feel my money is better spent with the rubi axles, though. I don't plan on running winch. I may add a front stubby though. And I hope the rear swing gate can handle a 35!

It's a lot stronger , and better built, than a TJ's tire carrier. It's my understanding it's rated for 50lbs.

Man, Im tired of responding to all these gear threads over and over again, doesnt anyone use the search feature?
Its like beating a dead horse trying to convince these number crunching people who have no actual experience with the effect of gear changing.
Maybe that is the reason all the others who have gears, never respond anymore?

People dont realize that it is not only the diameter of the tires, but the weight that kills the engine/trans performance.
So number crunching is not going to give you real world results.

I have an auto, 5.13's with 35's and Im glad I didnt go with 4.88's!
Every single person on this forum that has 5.13's (and there are MANY) will tell you the same thing.
I ran 4.10's with my 35's for 5 long weeks and it sucked to say the least.
I was worried I was going to burn up my trans it was shifting so often just to maintain any speed above 45 mph.
Throw in a head wind or a small hill and you might as well turn off the over drive just to maintain 55mph
My gas mileage went up 2mpg when I finally made the switch to 5.13's and it still doesnt have the power I was hoping to get from the gears,
but at least it will hold 65 mph without down shifting now

Go with the 5.13's for 35's if you have an auto

or 4.88's if you have a 6 speed.

That's what I and the majority of the rest of SoCal'rs run and it's just better than stock.

It is much stronger, but the main problem with the TJ's were the tailgate hinges not hold the weight and would sag over time.

The stock JK tire carrire holds a 35 no problem, Ive been using it since June (since the Mopar tire carrier sucks and doenst stay shut, so I removed it)
Ive even hit the ground with my spare once and didnt damage anything

BTW, the stock Rubicon spare weighs more then 50lbs...
I believe that 50lbs rating is ment to be on top of the spare for tire mounted racks/accessories
