Check the Status of your Jeep JK Wrangler - Order Status Codes
I've thought this exact same thing numerous times. I wouldn't be surprised if there is someone on this forum that works for Chrysler, so hoepfully they see this and take it back to whoever can make this happen. Probably wont do any good for those of us who have an order in, but maybe we can help for future orders.
Your order didn't go back to BG. Because it didn't go forward to BX. B is B. The difference between the G and X designation is whether at that moment the production facility is actively seeking orders to fill the next month's buildout or not. Think of it like the light in the refrigerator. When the door is opened, the light comes on. When the door shuts, the light goes off. Whether the door is opened or closed, you haven't moved an inch, you're still sitting in the refrigerator.
If Chrysler does read this thread for the love of all that is web, hire someone who knows or teach those who do the your jeep build portion of web, AJAX. There is no reason why you need to reload the page w/ each option selection.

Back on topic: Since I ordered mine just under 2 weeks ago, when is it considered appropriate to call and ask for a status?

I have thought the same thing many times.
If they had it set up to check on the web noone would care who checked and how often. I have had my dealer check for the most part, I have called cs twice, the second time the rep was so confused he had to call my dealer anyway. I'm checking through my dealer from now on but it's a bother for them as well. Jeep should get that feature on-line and let the really anxious guys just keep refreshing the page until their Jeep is built.

An online VON check would seem to be an easy web application. The database is already there, and the dealerships have access, why not make it available on the jeep.com website?
I also went to the INDY four wheel jamboree today. They had some great looking JK's.

Thanks to ToledoJeep's latest production/orders post, we can update our expectations for how long orders placed today will take to build:
So far in September they've received a total of 13,414 JK orders for an average of 958 per day.
Current production = 583 per day (5 days a week).
Total JK's on order = 49,972
JK Rubicon orders total 11870 @ 57 built per day = 208 build days required to fill those orders = 291 calendar days/41.6 weeks/~10 months average build time for a JK Rubicon order placed today.
The combined average build time for X and Sahara orders is 100 calendar days, with X's closer to a 9 week average.
Note that orders are still coming in at almost twice the pace than JK's are being built, which means that the list, and the wait, gets longer every day.
