This is something I've always done with my vehicles. Before winter, I get at least two good coats of a synthetic polish on it such as Klasse. This will help protect the paint. While you're at it and going over the surface of your paint, fill in any paint chips so they don't turn into rust spots down the road. This is especially important on the hinges if you don't have side steps to protect them from rocks coming up.

Oh and one more thing, the last time you take off the top before winter, make sure to rub all the rubber seals with a 100% silicone oil. I prefer to use the 100% silicone oil that is used in radio control car shocks. This is a quick and easy way to make sure the rubber seals last a long time.

Ok last consecutive post, I promise I would also be interested to know if there is anything you can apply to the undercarriage to protect it. I always hose it off really well after going mudding but if there is something more i can do then would love to know.

Got a link to some silicone oil? It won't cause leaks will it?

Also what is the proper way to use 4HI in snow and ice? Should I only use it with heavy snow on the roads? I can't go over 55, right?

Siping the tires will help in the ice, I think the BFG M/Ts would do ok though since they aren't too radical. For the underbody I just tough it up with spray paint before the winter and keep it clean. Over 5 years of this on my TJ (I live in the Ohio snow belt) and it still looks really good, worked great for the JK last year as well. As for using 4HI, you'll know when you need it, probably a lot less than you think. If you think you can do 55mph+ then you shouldn't need to be in 4WD.

Here is a link to the same oil that I use- http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LX3306&P=7

Basically you put some on a cloth and then use the cloth to rub down the rubber seals on your jeep. It won't cause leaks. Rather it softens and conditions the rubber so it has an even better seal . The reason I use this oil is because it's 100% silicone. That means that it won't attack the rubber and cause it to break down over time. Definitely DONT use wd-40 or stuff like that on your rubber seals because that stuff will attack the rubber. You can order the 100% silicone oil online from any of the hobby sites such as tower hobbies or if you have a local hobby store then you can pick some up there. That small $3.39 bottle should pretty much last you a loooong time.
