Purchased the Mopar latch. Built like a tank. You need a heavy duty pop riveter to install. Purchased the riveter from Harbor Freight, cheap price works great. The problem is the lock doesn't work. I can still lift the hood a bit and release the safety latch. The problem is the latch plate on the lock moves clockwise with the key when locking, but the safety latch on the hood moves to the right to release and there is just enough clearance for it to open. It seems the lock should turn counter clockwise so that the latch plate holds the hood safety in a closed position. Does everybody else turn their key clockwise to lock ? If so check to see if you can still open you hood. I'll have to weld a small slotted plate on the latch plate to make it work.

 

Mine pops up maybe 2 cm with the lock on. Really glad I bought the mopar hood lock, I went out to plug in my block heater a few minutes ago and the rubber piece that goes over the lock was peeled back and it was pretty obvious by the scratches on it that someone(s) had tried to open it, cpl of minor scratches on drivers door keyhole too. Some people's kids man.

 

The Mopar one was pretty easy to install, but the big a$$ rivets were a SOB. I said in my last post it came up 2 cm but I meant to say 2 millimetres. Overall the damn thing is built like a tank and well worth the $125 if for nothing else than peace of mind, stopped the "hood dance" too.

 

Had the Rugged Ridge hood lock on my JK 2-door I just traded. Not worth the money. I took the Jeep in for a free first oil change at my dealer. I forgot I failed to provide the key to the hood lock. The service department guy rolled the Jeep out and said he didn't need it, he just bent the tab down enough to unlock the hood and then bent it back to "lock it". And there was no visible damage to the Rugged Ridge lock. He then commented that he installed one on his JK and returned it after he realized it was so easy to do this. Again, keeps the honest person honest I suppose. I will save the $$$ to buy the Mopar lock eventually for my new Unlimited. Rugged Ridge needs to rethink their design.

 

Exact same for me. But I will add that this is really poorly designed. The paint on the lock (not the frame) fall off after 2 weeks and the worst, the lock is open for the snow, the rain, the dust, the mud, etc. Everything that a normal Jeep usualy see. It's actually a problem since I need to add windshield washer and there's too much in the lock. and it do not work anymore. Now that I saw that I can bend it (Thanks to downtoearth!) I'll try that, and just put that thing in the garbage! I'm really not satisfied about that. Exact same thing about the gas trap with the lock on it. The locks installed on these products are locks for inside furniture like desk or cabinet. This should not be on an exterior product!

Do not buy that scrap, it do not worth 5$!

i have the mopar lock and like it very much. a) rubber flap keeps dirt out. b) keyed alike so i only have one key, same for gas lock as well. c)my key can come out in either locked or unlocked position. which more than one time i have left it unlocked for long periods because i got so excited to check out what i just finished and forgot i hadn't locked it. I got it when i bought it so now i might have a hard time paying the money for it but i do sleep well at night knowing that someone can't just open the hood and either take what they want or get in without me knowing. well thats if it didn't forget to lock it again.

 

Mopar product seems really good, but 200$ is so expensive for something that should comes with the vehicle! I would appreciate if Tuffy, which is a really great company IMO, could produce something similar, or locking hatches maybe...

 

$200? Seriously? The dealership I bought it from quoted me $165, I ended up getting it for like $100 because my sister works there and got me some sort of discount. I know the prices are a little higher depending on where you live, but Montreal area is where one of Chrysler/Mopar's biggest part warehouses are, I figured stuff would be cheaper in Quebec than anywhere.

 

I based my comment on what the other said but I didn't look by myself. I'll ask my dealer and will see. But between you and me, I think 100$ is also a lot of money to have a hood secured when this should be a serial part of the truck! Is there an other vehicle on the market that do not have his hood locked? It appears to be a very bad idea to not giving it with the Jeep.
