Jeep wave origin?
Those Jeep rules are cute and worth a chuckle, but they're just absurd. In the 1-2 second interval where you're approaching another Jeep, that's a LOT of mental math to cover before deciding who should initiate the wave, etc. That's what I would say if I took it seriously.
In reality, the rules are real simple: Wave to any Wrangler you see - go ahead and initiate it.
Personally, I wave to any Wrangler, period. I also wave to any Cherokee, Liberty or Grand Cherokee that has obvious mods (lift, off-road lights, etc.); I will end up doing the same for modded Patriots, too (although I haven't seen such a thing yet).
I do NOT wave to Compasses or Commanders, because in my area, they're all driven by soccer moms that don't know a thing about the wave, and just give me a confused look in return...

Just to clarify - when I wrote that I wave to any Wrangler, I include all Wrangler predecessors in that statements (CJs, Willys, etc.). I'll also wave back to any Jeep that initiates (even if it IS a Compass, I guess).
As far as the proper wave, my wife makes fun of me for throwing up a full-hand (in a sort of "Halt!" pose), so I've taken to just flashing the peace sign, which seems to get a better response than a typical wave...

actually, based on my own personnal experience driving a friends restored MB...
I think the "wave" originated with 2 drivers...
...barrelling hell bent for leather straight for each other down a narrow winding dirt road with a vertical cliff on one side and a 400 foot precipice on the other side...
...frantically waving their arms for the other to get the hell out of the way because neither one's brakes worked worth a damn.
~but that is just me.

I was just an old fashioned guy that was using the standard issue open handed wave. Now I'm a new Jeeper learning the new and exciting secret symbols of the Jeep society.
Using the two finger wave does make it that much easier to make the one finger wave. Just drop one finger and rotate the hand 180 degrees

So that's what the wave is. I've been thinking that there were a lot of old hippies giving the peace sign while driving jeeps.
