In reality, the rules are real simple: Wave to any Wrangler you see - go ahead and initiate it.

Personally, I wave to any Wrangler, period. I also wave to any Cherokee, Liberty or Grand Cherokee that has obvious mods (lift, off-road lights, etc.); I will end up doing the same for modded Patriots, too (although I haven't seen such a thing yet).

I do NOT wave to Compasses or Commanders, because in my area, they're all driven by soccer moms that don't know a thing about the wave, and just give me a confused look in return...
I wave at any flat fender, or willy's product, CJ, or wranglers. If others wave at me I wave back. Anyone out on the trails I wave to. The wave was started for the above jeeps and to me it should be kept with the original history of the wave. To me it is like a special hand shake that is shared with others that are in the know. Just my opinion.

If I don't get a response for my wave, I simply lower 3 of the four fingers on my waving hand

Could you be more concise?

Just to clarify - when I wrote that I wave to any Wrangler, I include all Wrangler predecessors in that statements (CJs, Willys, etc.). I'll also wave back to any Jeep that initiates (even if it IS a Compass, I guess).

As far as the proper wave, my wife makes fun of me for throwing up a full-hand (in a sort of "Halt!" pose), so I've taken to just flashing the peace sign, which seems to get a better response than a typical wave...

actually, based on my own personnal experience driving a friends restored MB...

I think the "wave" originated with 2 drivers...

...barrelling hell bent for leather straight for each other down a narrow winding dirt road with a vertical cliff on one side and a 400 foot precipice on the other side...
...frantically waving their arms for the other to get the hell out of the way because neither one's brakes worked worth a damn.

~but that is just me.

As funny as that sounds, it's probably pretty close to right.

So that's what the wave is. I've been thinking that there were a lot of old hippies giving the peace sign while driving jeeps.

I was just an old fashioned guy that was using the standard issue open handed wave. Now I'm a new Jeeper learning the new and exciting secret symbols of the Jeep society.

Using the two finger wave does make it that much easier to make the one finger wave. Just drop one finger and rotate the hand 180 degrees

When I was driving my first cj 21 years ago the wave was the hole hand. Either throught windshield or if your window was down, arm and hand out the window. If the top was off, it was out the top. Using 2 finger is a good way to not be seen. If your going to be waving give them a real wave. I am not a long haired hippie type pinko tree huggin dope smoken yogurt eatin VW busdriving tye dye wearin sandle walkin flag burnin military hatein war protesten free loving type of a person. I might be just a little bit of a redneck. ya think? oops got on my soapbox again. Now truthfully, I had my hair down to the middle of my back and did alot of things I shouldn't have, I didn't protest the viet nam war and didn't burn any flags, never wore tye dye or sandles, never drove a VW bus, or hug trees and I hate yogurt. ( grew up in the late 60's and early 70's) But I have always done the Jeep wave like it was a friendly wave and they new I was waving. Lets wave like we mean it.
