Prevent hitting deer ?

Try telling that to the dear I've killed.
I have found (in N. J.) that at night if I drive without the headlights I can see much futher down the road and to the sides. Almost as if it were dusk. Of course the moon could not be completely dark. I could even see jack rabbits and stuff well ahead of time. At 125+ it was important to me. With the headlights on I could only see as far as the lights reached and virually nothing much to the sides.
Dears may freeze in lights, but when they are in front of you it is not pleasant, and I've had one 8 pointer basically run towards me right between the lights. I had to stop and wait it out.
As far as I'm concerned you just take your chances, and in high humidity environements where the moon lights up a lot, then go without headlights unless other cars are about.
Do they make anything to prevent from hitting owls. Almost hit one, one night. Five days later an owl hit one of my black magic hella lights. I will say the light still works. Just cracked the plastic housing.
I go to work at 4am, its too dark to take pics then and VDOT picks up the carcases everyday so they are gone when i commute home. I see on average 2-3 dead ones every am, and anywhere from 0-a dozen or more alive. I only commute 10 miles round trip each day all city driving, folks out in the countryside around Roanoke probably see way more than that!

i'm glab this subject makes such a stir here it brings out a lot of information
