I have hauled about 4,000 behind mine with 2 polaris ranger RZR's 4 ATV's and a 20'foot trailer. I didn't have electrick brakes hooked up yet it pulled fine but stopping took a few more feet!

Thanks for all the great info everyone. We are looking at an 18 foot this weekend. I figure if I break something, it is more justification to the wife to make it bigger and tougher.

Hypothetically, if you lifted your jeep and increased your gears, besides the engine, what limits the jeep to such a low tow capacity?...I know coils aren't ideal for hauling/towing, but if you added HD coils would that help increase it at all?

In some states +2000lbs requires a brake by law.

you have to stay within the weight limit because if not if you get into a accident the fault is yours no matter what and it opens a can of legal worms.... pluss you dont want to flip your jeep over cause you were thinking I think I can right?

I ahve the same question. What limits the jeep. The reason i ask is because if we can figure out what is the limiting factor then we can upgrade that component(s). Does anyone have any idea.

Nothing you do to the JK will increase the legal tow capacity of the Unlimited with 3.73 gears, unless you can get it re-certified by the manufacturer.

In Europe, they are legally certified to tow 2 times what we can, set up exactly like ours.

The problem I have seen with a standard trailer is the wind resistance. A good headwind will hold you back more than a steep hill. You will also need a leveling hitch to keep the trailer straight and level. I would visit an RV dealer and get things setup right.

I don't know what the books or anything says but I towed a U-haul full size car trailer with a 99 Honda Accord with gear 356 miles one way and had no issues whatsoever. JKU is one tough cookie for towing I'd say.
