Default Bed Liner Inside Freedom Top

I finally got around to doing something about the ugly white freedom top on my JK. There are a bunch of top bed liner threads but most people have opted to use Duplicolor spray bed liner. I was at Walmart at the time and could only find Rustoleum Bed Liner and decided to give it a try.

The first picture you can see the darker spot on the right I started to get a run, luckily since this stuff sprays on pretty thick, with another coat or two you can pretty much cover any runs.

The back portion of my top will have to wait for a nicer weekend, rain is too intermittent out here in WA right now...

I am writing this as I let the bed liner dry. My first impressions are good, it seems to be descent quality for a spray can liner. The texture is not as abrasive as say Line-x but that's not what I was looking for. I will post further comments in a few days after I see how it holds up.

...2.5" Teraflex coil and shock lift, front/rear track bars and spydertrax spacers come this week! More posts to come

The first panel I sprayed I attempted to scuff the surface with sandpaper then cleaned off the dust but the sandpaper I used, i believe 250..., just made the surface smoother than it was to begin with. The second panel i just used a scouring pad to clean the dirt and scuff off and left the original paint the way it was seeing as it is all ready a pretty rough surface for paint/bedliner to adhere to.

My only advice is to take your time and 3-4 light coats to avoid runs and to achieve an even spray. Unfortunately I don't have the time to leave the panels off for a couple days and let them cure in the sun. The weather here has started downwards. I am actually using the heat lamp in my bathroom to dry out the paint faster. The rest of the hardening will take place with the hardware on and on my jeep, luckily it won't take much of a beating there.

The can says you can use it on bar metal or over the paint on a truck bed so I don't see why it wouldn't be the same as spraying over the white paint on the panels.

The only other thing I noticed was that its about time to get new cushioning around the edges and weather stripping as they are getting pretty beat up...for now I just taped over it. Hope this all answers your questions.

I am totally doing this next weekend. I prefer soft tops which are black inside. Can not stand all the white top in my Jeep. I was going to go flat black for plastic but I really like the bed liner look. Nice work.

Looks good! I am thinking about doing this same thing. Not in the near future but soon. The white is...ok...but I do like the black better. My only concern is if it will make me feel like I am in a cave when driving since my windows are tinted. I know at night it is a bit annoying but I am getting used to it...slowly.

I will be doing this in the summer when I can put the soft top on or be topless. I really hate the white!!!

Looks great. Does the bedliner offer any more sound dampening? Also, what is the cost on it?

It takes a couple of hours to dry, but it takes a couple of days to totally cure. I put the panels back on the same day I painted them. Biggest issue I dealt with was the smell for a few weeks after. Until the bed liner fully cures and the smell dissipates, try leaving your windows cracked to allow the air inside to circulate while parked. The hotter it is outside the worse it will be!!

But, after a couple of weeks the smell goes away completely!! I've had these done for over a year now and LOVE it. Still have not got around to doing the back portion, unfortunately I was in Iraq last summer, so it's a project for this summer!
