Custom Snorkel/CAI
I got the Idea from another forum member (Thedirtman) and decided to run with it. This project could not have been done without the assistance of my friend Karls10jk and with the ocasional phone call to Dirtman. Being that Karl played a key role, he will also be posting on this write-up. The link posted below is from Dirtmans "custom snorkel", being that the snorkel project was originated by him and it's only fair to show everyone his ingenuity and give credit where it's due........

So it starts- you need some basic things to get this process started:
-3.5" holesaw, bi-metal cutting blade is required
-24" x 3" o.d. aluminum pipe
-1 90* silicon elbow
-2 45* elbows
-1 small air filter (ricer style/ small one for oil vent)
-1 air filter for on top of the cowl
-6 T-clamps to secure the air intake together
-1 custom battery/ fuse box tray
Ok, first step- remove your.......... (Karls turn, bear with us)

When your trying to measure the cut in firewall it's aprox 11-3/8" from side panel to "hole center" Remeber, you only have one shot at this so be patient and take measurments.
When getting the elbow into the upper cowl, be patient because it is a very tight fit and needs a bit of wiggling.
The screen he is reffering to in the upper cowl, is from the blower box. The 90* elbow has alot of ben in it, but I still needed to cut the screen in order for it to fit. I know that may raise a concern, but the elbow blocks anything from getting sucked into the blower box.
You may want to fit the aluminum pipe into the elbow to help wedge up into the cowl, but spray some type of lubricant on it first because its a very tight fit inside the elbow and not easliy removed....

lol.. i was going to say.. you should have typed it all up in word and then just copy and pasted it.
side note.. Dirtman is going to help me next week or so install a bunch of stuff on my jeep.. going to start ordering all the parts for his snorkel as well. its pretty amusing to watch him work.

That great. Take note sponsors, if you make it they will buy it. I think it would look really great with a top snorkel like those you see on, I can't believe I'm going to say this, an H1 or other military vehicles.

There is an air filter up on top of the cowl but he is gonna do a top spin air filter soon. The way we have it set up now, he can actually add on more tubing and extend the snorkel piece all the way above the roof if he really wants to.
As far as the extra room under the hood- dual batteries are possible but we're thinking ammo can since it fits pretty well right there. It could be lockable underhood storage.
I'm thinking about doing the battery tray just because of the room it frees up.

Nice. extending the snorkel is possible.. but obviously would be a large vision obstruction. could use a couple elbows to fix that though. I dont plan on driving my jeep in water over my hood so I dont think it will be too much of an issue. either way.. nice job.. im sure dirtman will be impressed.

Yes, Karl did the cuts, but technically it's only 3 cuts and he did 2 of them. The first cut I did in the upper cowl (first time ever cutting metal like this) and from there it was no turning back. I don't have any pics of battery tray. The door trim I used was actually garage door trim. I didn't seal underneath where it sits on cowl piece though. The trim has a nice snug fit and didn't want to worry about taking off the paint if I decide to remove and cap it off. The filter I used measures about 6", but the pre-cleaner I'm waiting on is 5" in height with an inlet of 3.03" to give a snug fit over the 3" pipe. One thing I'm trying to figure out now, is how to run an inline filter somewhere in the middle for extra filtering. As of right now, no luck so will have to fabricate my own unless anyone has some ideas for me......
