What I was doing wrong was waiting too long in between steps 1 & 2. The entire process took maybe 2 seconds.

Too bad I did not get any codes.

My issue is my battery seems to go dead every once in a while for no apparent reason. When I say seems it is because if I keep trying to start my Jeep it will start. I just noticed yesterday that when this happens when I turn off my Jeep both blinkers blink twice? Any ideas? I bought my 09 4dr JK used about 9 months ago, the guy I bought it from said he had some battery issues in the past. He upgraded the alternator and replaced battery. I have also replaced the battery about 2 months ago.
This is off-topic, but it came up so. . .

ECU won't let the engine try to start if the voltage is low. Then it starts, suggesting the voltage came back to normal. This is not the battery, probably never was. Sounds like an intermittent connection.

Go over all the cables. Check for loose or corroded connections. Best way is to take the connection apart and have a look. Use emery cloth or a wire brush and contact cleaner to get a nice shiny connection. (Talking about bolt-on connections here like battery, starter, or grounds - not plastic plugins.) Pay special attention to both ends of every ground connection under the hood and under the dashboard. Half the grounds were loose in my '11 when I got it.

It this doesn't help, then the problem is happening where your eyes can't see. That's a PITA and a whole 'nuther story.

So, what's the purpose of disabling ESP for day-to-day driving? Does it put excessive wear on the tires? Gears? Axle?

I disabled mine for 2 reasons.

1. I tried to accelerate from a stop on a cold rainy night. Floored it to get going and instead of wheel spin, the engine revs are reduced until the tire speeds come back into a normal range. Well thats great if you're alone in the woods but when another car is about to broad side you, you'll take any little forward movement that you can.

2. My rear brakes were shot after 10k miles from them automatically being applied to get the tire speeds closer together.

I'm not saying you have to disable it, but my jeep drives better for me without it.
